Boulderman1988
Hi, After having my gearbox removed and looked at i've been told in no uncertain terms that i need a new gearbox due to wear on the cogs particularly 1st and 2nd. This was manifesting as whining noises and crunchy changes, which i initially assumed to be the bearings, but apparently they are all ok, its the gears themselves that are not doing so well. Does anyone know of the cost involved and where to get a reconditioned unit, or how much replacement internals typically cost at a gearbox specialist (and how available are they)? Not too keen on chancing a 2nd hand one and having the same issues so would need either the existing gearbox refurbing or buying an already refurbished CD009 gearbox. I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted whilst the box was out but the garage wasnt too keen on refurbing the box. I live in the west midlands (sutton coldfield) if it makes a difference. Sargara
I cant help with the costs unfortunately but I just wanted to say Ive got exactly the same issues (whine in 1st, crunch going 1st to 2nd) but I just live with it, so I will be interested to know what you get quoted. Boulderman1988
Looks like you have a DE? I think the earlier gearboxes are prone to synchros wearing out which might be the crunching issue, and this should not be so much of a problem on the later HR 350's. That's why its annoying because mine is a relatively low mileage (50k) 2008 HR so i wasn't expecting anything like this when i bought it... Problem is i can feel the resistance through the whole drive-train and it just doesnt feel efficient - like the engine is having to work harder against the gearbox issues - so its ruining the driving experience at the moment otherwise i'd just live with it too
Sargara
Yes mine is a DE, but also lower mileage than yours (34k). I know the syncro's are prone but I would assume that only explains the crunch, not the whine in 1st. Have you driven another 350z to compare this percieved drivetrain issue with? glrnet
Mine's a DE, bought it with 31/32k on the clock, syncho went on 5th week 1. Dealer sorted it and all good since, 33k miles later.
Boulderman1988
Yeah that makes sense, i think all 350's have relatively noisy transmissions anyway. No this is the only one i have ever driven but def doesn't feel the same as when i bought it and i now know the gearbox is buggered having had it looked at, cougar store also previously told me mine is unusually noisy in 1st and 2nd. Maybe the diff is having issues too - ill change the diff oil this week and see if it makes a difference. Anyway back to the original question does anyone know how much a reconditioned CD009 would cost or know the availability and cost of replacement internals at a transmission specialist? Sargara
Our cars are relatively rare at the end of the day so I doubt you will find somewhere with a reconditioned 350z gearbox on the shelf,. I think your only options would be being without your car for X days while your gearbox is removed, reconditioned and refitted. Or sourcing a 2nd hand gearbox and sending it off to be reconditioned. The latter will be more expensive but less inconvience. I've used Agency Transmissions in the past for my Clio sport and they were very reasonable with price, give them a call for a quote: Address: Unit 17k/Shrub Hill, Worcester WR4 9EL Phone:01905 24896 Edited June 19, 2015 by Sargara
