Garyt350z
As title suggests, am needing to buy a new air con radiator and also get it gassed, but now am thinking, why should I not go in the opposite direction, saving both weight and drain on the engine. Any experts or similar scenarios shed any light on this?
GMballistic
Pro ~ You will save maybe 14-15kg of weight. Con ~ You won't have air con, may slightly devalue your Zed come resale time and will regret it the first time it's really hot & you get stuck in a traffic jam. Kev
Would put 99% of buyers off.
spursmaddave
Saving 1% of weight, pointless imo and I agree would devalue the car more than it would cost to get fixed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
jumping350
As GM mentioned will be good to save some weight (depends what your goals are) but alas you may regret it one day and may end up looking like this
ZMANALEX
Also difficult to clear steamy windows without AC.
GMballistic
Also difficult to clear steamy windows without AC. That's a very good point. Would be such a nuisance in winter without it.
veilside z
You could always go second hand parts to keep costs down. Best to keep it original spec.
Desey
Pointless unless you were exclusively going for lap times and if that were the case you probably wouldn't have bought a 350z
AMT
There is no good reason to remove air con... sorted lol
Ekona
How much other weight have you removed from the car? Unless the answer is everything, then this isn't a good idea.

Garyt350z
Lol a good few points made Here, and my only counter point to that is, when I finished with he she will be under a cover in my garage. So resale isn't an issue. Cleaning steamy windows however is cause for some reason my rear window demister isn't working anymore and AC worked a treat last winter cause I was unable to find the fault
Garyt350z
* would it save anything on efficiency or add a few bhp??
Ekona
It cannot ever add bhp. Go and put 15 bags of sugar in the car and see if you can tell the difference. If you can then great, strip it out! If not, then don't bother.
spursmaddave
Also difficult to clear steamy windows without AC. Good point! I ran my all year round in my Zed, the back window in particular was a nightmare without air on!

Exactly, if it was a micra then you would maybe notice it but on a lardy, lazy V6 Zed not a bloody chance!
wmr1980
Even though I seldom use it, it's bliss when you do. I'd miss it at the times I need it.
Garyt350z
Ok guys, point taken, invest in a second had A/C rad! That's what this forum is all about! Thanks
Garyt350z
Ps I didn't mean add bhp in that way lol I just thought with one motor less to Run would I see any difference
Ian
My car doesn't have air con doesn't really fit though
evilscorp
One less thing for the engine to turn. The air con pump will cause drag even when not on, so you may gain back 0.5bhp from the drive train losses??? I only say this as I broke my air con pipe ages ago and keep toying with the idea of removing the unit and all the guff rather than buy a new pipe
nissanman312
I had a ctr with no air con I loved that car bit absolutely hated it when it was hot didn't even want to go near it
GT4 Zed
I took out my air con 2yrs ago before going supercharged since the condenser was busted and though I've not really missed it because I hardly used it except on the track were it gets hot sometimes, I really did not feel any "gains" from freeing up parasitic loses from the powertrain. However I think my cooling system is more efficient because of having one less rad in the way but it could also be because I have a 30% bigger rad, higher performance coolant and water wetter, extra 1l oil capacity and oil cooler. Like others have said for a DD keep your AC. Unless 3-5hp is so important to you.
HaydnH
Judging by the above, having a "broken" condenser seems to be a common fault on the Z! Has your aircon actually stopped working? One year Nissan offered me a free aircon refill with the service so I obviously took it... oddly the next year there was UV fluid all over and the pipes had split, apparently... and my aircon is still working fine 3 years later with no further refills. One of the reasons I gave up on FNSH and started using an indie. Edited May 12, 2015 by HaydnH
