New car suggestions

All new cars will take their first hit with depreciation within the first twelve months. A good 12 to 18 month year old car would provide excellent value for money, often with higher specs than you could have afforded newer. As having and enjoyed Japanese motoring previously, would not rule out such. I hope you find the perfect car in the end . :)

Jag XKR-S?

Might be a bit over the £40K budget still Stu I'd guess ~ had a look after me, SMD and ATTAK Z were chatting about them & they were around $45K+ used.

Personally I'd go for the GTR especially as I've heard prices for them seem to be going up rather than down for the most part so could be a good investment. ;)

Sad state of affairs ;) yes, the price on the 2009/2010/2011 cars is holding pretty steady (at least for the good ones).

- GTR would be the ideal as I've always wanted to own one. Does anybody know more about servicing costs? For my budget im expecting a 09-10 with 30-40k miles so I'm guessing the more miles the more it costs to service?

Once again, thanks for all the suggestions

They are great cars, but they are expensive to maintain... I have had mine for 3.5 years now (from new) and it runs a little over 600hp. Its the longest I have ever owned a car and have no intention of selling any time soon.

Among the group i mix with both the C63 and the GTR R35 are cars i have recently driven and played with and until i drove the GTR i was sort of getting the itch for a C63 merc but not after a play with the Nissan GTR i would be only up for the GTR now although the rear seats really are not very much use in the rear of the Nissan so only the Merc is a 4 seat if thats a important ?

To be fair the GTR was nearly double the price of the C63 but if its me im in for the GTR just try a launch control and then tell me you want the Merc lol

I tested a C63 and I found it underwhelming............ the noise was nice, but that was it. Then you have to deal with Merc dealers :(

You would only need one service a year , that's what the specialist independents recommend

Technically, yes.... Nissan used the 2 service schedule purely as a method of "keeping an eye" on cars to see if anything was outside of tolerances, parts had excessive wear, etc.

Considering the miles you are doing, 1 service a year is acceptable, but I wouldnt go as far as recommended. Personally, I like the fact the Sly sees my car at least twice a year. Even if its just a small oil change.

I dont know the cost of servicing alone as I have never had just a service done :D there is always other parts going on changing, etc.

I've always appreciated the presence and engine of the c63, the 4 seats it's just a bonus as I won't necessarily be needing them, and as you've said its like £10-£15k less than the GTR. Think I need to go out there and drive both the c63 and the GTR before Anything

I have had 4 adults in the GTR, but its not comfortable and I wouldnt go very far like that.... we were all quite short as well. I plan to remove the rear seats and put in a small rear half cage............ eventually.

Would the one service a year on the GTR be a large one then I'm guessing? Has anybody any experience with the running costs of the GTR? Another main thing is the car won't be tracked so the brakes etc. won't require changing as commonly as tracked cars

Not necessarily, you really need to speak to a specialist and see what they about servicing.

My car is tracked and its not that bad on the tyres and oil, its the brakes that take a beating!!!

Why not give Sly a call?

Instead of people on here guessing and regurgitating stuff they have seen/read, he will be able to give you up to date accurate info, every single time I have been there he has 2/3 different GTRs in for work

Usually my red one, right? Car spends way too much time there....

Most definitely.... Sly has been servicing my car from day one and is fantastic! In fact, I am collecting my car from him tomorrow morning. If you are serious about a GTR pop over and have a chat with him and if you are there between 0930 & 1000 I can take you out in my car ;)

I have just recently bought a 2012 640d - what a machine! How can something so powerful be so economical, there must be some sort of magic under the hood . Over 500 miles from £70 economical and would embarrass most cars in a straight line - 0-60 5.5 secs and more torque than a r8 v8. I needed something economical and special (read as fast) as my daily commute is 40 miles each way and it fits the bill perfectly. No fun around corners, but it is such a nice place to be. Test drive what is off interest, and when it feels right (like it did with the Zed and 640d) just go for it!

Grahamc - thanks for the informative response. I am from Sheffield and the only GTR specialist nearby is a local NHPC that's about 20 miles from me that I'm aware of, where abouts is sly based?

I think that if I was to own a GTR I would have the 2 services per year, even if one is just an oil change and check over as you've mentioned for piece of mind. Obviously to get a 09/10 GTR my 40k budget would probably be all gone, which is why I've considered other cars I.e the c63. I think most important thing is to get out there and test drive some. All that being said it is a dream to own a GTR, my partners next door neighbour has owned pretty much every car under the sun (Aston Martin, Bentley, Porsche etc.) and his favourite of all was the Nissan as an all rounder.

Opposite end of the country.... Kent. I think SVM offer a collection/drop-off service (they are only 100 miles from Sheffield).

I would definitely spend as much as possible on the best car you find.

Thats why its so hard to change from the GTR, its so good all round.

And dont think that you wont take it on track.... you seen realise that the car is wasted on the roads and the only place to truly see what it can do is a race track ;)

The cheapest part about owning a GTR is running a GTR. It's the endless modding that will leave you bankrupt :D

SVM or ACspeedtech (Warrington) would be your best bets for servicing/modding. My car's Litchfield tuned by looked after by Andy at ACspeedtech, can't say enough positive things about the guy.

You don't need to service a GTR every 6 months, I've moved my 59 plate to an annual service with a simple oil change and checkover every 6 months.

As graham says, if you get one, get it on track. It's absolutely awesome although it does show its weight at more technical tracks (Oulton) over flatter/faster circuits (Silverstone).

As for quick running costs:

Fuel: 14mpg

Tyres: £900-1100 (MPSS or Cup 2)

Brakes Pads: £250-500 (Per axle)

Brake Discs: £750+ (Per axle)

Servicing: Litchfield have a PDF showing costs - http://www.litchfiel...s-July 2014.pdf

Never take it to a Nissan dealership unless it's Middlehursts and even then they charge top whack.

I know I'm not close by but if you fancy a nose round one and talk more in depth just drop me a PM :)

And to add to Grahams lovely photos:

TomS - thanks a lot for the helpful response. I have been doing my research a little more on the GTR and been on the GTR forum and found that a fair few of the owners follow a similar servicing schedule. I have seen the litchfield service pdf before and found that helpful, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that one comes up within the next few months. Thanks again for the responses.

Great pics of the cars by the way!! ðŸ‘

Not been to Oulton, but have been to Silverstone, Castle Combe (new tarmac - so no more rumble strips) and Thruxton and the GTR was pretty good at all of them ;)

The MPSS tyres did show their weakness at Thruxton, the "rocknrolling" on the flat out bends, but still good fun!

Heard good about AC SpeedTech - in post above.... didnt know where they were though

Yeah the MPSS on track aren't the best, could do with Cup 2 or R888 (if you don't drive in the wet). Good fun though, got Anglesey booked for July which I've not been to before!

MPSS are a good all round all weather weather tyre, but not my preference on track

Cup2s will more than likely be next on my car, doubt I could live with the whine of the R888s... had them on my impreza and it was too much for road trips, etc

Let me know how Anglesey goes, I want to do it as well.... love this!
