Temporary toy for the summer - Porsche Cayman S

So, I went to help Darren on his 240z today and before I shoot home, we went for a quick blast where I got to drive the Porker.

Must say, quite impressed with the power and the handling of the Boxter S for such a small car. Didn't take long, but decided I want to try the bigger brother for a few months, the Cayman S, before selling the 370z and the rest of the parts and buying the GT-R R35. :)

Had a look on PH, AT and EB, found one I like (2 prev owners, 70k miles, good history etc), so going to test drive it on Monday, with Darren :)

I never thought I'm going to do this, but hey, looks like it's happening. :surrender:

So, Ekona, help a brother out, what else do I need to look out for, what sort of problems?

Couldn't help not looking at this, but don't think I'm going to bother :lol:http://www.softronic...er-package-plus

All assuming gen1 cars...

RMS failure is common enough, unless it's horrendous then you can just live with it whilst keeping an eye on the oil level.

IMS failure is the big one on the M96/97 engines. Essentially it's pot luck and unless you fancy dropping the engine and separating the 'box to replace it, then there's not a lot you can really do. My own rule of thumb is that if a car has managed to get past 80k miles then it'll probably be okay. They usually go between 40k-80k, but have been known to go outside of that. Expect a repair cost of between £5k-£10k, depending on what gets damaged when valves collide.

D-chunk and bore scoring are also an issue, which is why a boroscope inspection is a MUST do before purchase. You can help prevent this by fitting a low temp stat from Hartech, very easy to do.

Don't buy an auto, the 'box is crap. If you get one with 19" wheels then make sure it has PASM, as the ride is awful otherwise. You'd be better off with the 18" wheels and standard suspension, much better ride and drive, plus replacing the stock suspension with something better is cheaper ;)

Sat nav is crap, actively avoid that and the Bose stereo as replacing that with aftermarket is mega bucks due to the MOST wiring. Sport seats should be a must-have too as the standard seats aren't very supportive.

Just do not buy without an inspection. Far too big a risk on these cars IMHO.

Great cars...but the engines are a time bomb.

I'd only buy one that needed a rebuild then have it sorted by someone like Hartech.

It's a disgrace Porsche fitted seriously flawed engines to boxsters, caymans and 996/997.1 Carreras for over a decade.

At that price....hmmmm....interesting. Am I right in thinking there are stronger/better IMS's that can be fitted as a precaution - would all in cost be around £1,500 if a specialist did it?

"So what can be done to minimize the likelihood of an IMS failure?

Although a greatly debated subject, most experts agree that more frequent oil changes every 6 months or 5,000 miles is a good first step.

Secondly, actually driving your Porsche more often and avoiding higher gears to keep the revs above 2500-3000 rpm is another good step to take to improve the life of the ball-bearing in the intermediate shaft. Although there is limited data, the general trend is that lower mileage vehicles with infrequent oil changes or driven light-footed (as in run at low speed/engine rpms) are most likely to suffer a failure rather than those cars that are driven hard and well-maintained.

Lastly, use of premium engine oil such as Motul’s 8100 X-Cess 5w40 (which is a Porsche approved oil) or Joe Gibbs DT40 can also provide added protection to all critical engine components."

Hmmm... So don't buy from "1 previous lady owner" but from racing boys"?

I'm being put off by the Porsches now :(
