Automatic Transmission Question

My 2003 V35 / G35 350Gt has done around 43K, I'm not sure if its Auto box is the same as the Z but my question is quite generic.

Last night my wife took the car to work from cold start and once she had reversed off drive, she engaged Drive and as she accelerated the cars revs went up but the car seemed to slip until she backed of the gas and went again.

On questioning her she said it also happened at the first junction she stopped at on her trip to work, then did not happen again.

I personally have never experienced this problem, possibly because I warm the car up before I set off.

For me both the engine and gearbox are nice and smooth.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue, I have read that auto boxes have a feature called lock up that does not engage until car reaches a certain speed and was wondering if this is a safety feature designed to protect gearbox.

Would this coupled with my wife being heavy on the gas pedal at a time the cars revs are higher due to cold start cause this.

I have checked the fluid at the dip stick and its at the correct level, looks clear on the stick and is the usual pinkish colour. It has a sweet smell and not a smell of burning, so there is no real indication of wear and tear of gearbox, levels are good which indicates no leak and has not been contaminated by coolant.

I welcome your opinions.

What ^^^^^ marzman has said.

Then report back.

FYI the auto box in the G35 Skyline is the same as the VQ35DE.

I have 2 in stock at the moment, however I doubt very much that you have an issue where the box will have to be swopped out.

Also the fluid is meant to be fluid for life.

Alex. :)

Thanks marzman & Alex

It most definitely hasn't happened to me yet and I've taken it for a spin this afternoon testing both auto & semi auto it pulls nicely with no noise or burning smell.

I'm beginning to think her foot slipped between brake pedal and accelorater 🙈

That's good news thought I may have to change it at some point.

Fill your boots mate as the fluid is circa £200.00

Wow that much I thought it would about £15 a quart for s matic.

I've read so much conflicting information on wether to change the auto fluid or not.

I know there's no filter to change and had read that changing the fluid on a 40k plus car could do damage to auto box.

To be honest I think it will probably be wheel spin.

Traction control sometimes doesn't kick in at all if I pull away a bit sharpish in a straight line.

You could be right as she can be a bit heavy on the gas lol

It is J matic that you require not S matic.

Oh I thought J matic had been upgraded to S.

Like I say I've read so much info that conflicts.

So just to confirm Alex, although it does not require changing, if it ever needed topping up it would be J matic?

Thanks

I would have to check mate as I am not aware of J Matic being upgraded to S Matic.
