Ekona
Congrats to the new rules brought in after 9/11 to make sure people can't get into the cockpit then!
Beavis
Under normal conditions they can by using a special code, but this can be overidden mechanically. It pretty much rules out the rapid decompression theory because the door automatically becomes unlocked in such an event. Knowing what was going on and and how this was going to end, then may be he should have tried kicking a window out to force a decompression. The last 8 minutes of the flight would have been terrible for those onboard, especially watching some trying to smash the door down before been slammed into a rock face at approx 400mph! JetSet
Congrats to the new rules brought in after 9/11 to make sure people can't get into the cockpit then! Quite true. Over in America they an unofficial 2 person in the cockpit rule so that if one of the pilots needs to leave the cockpit at any time a stewart will take his/her place until the pilot returns. Its unofficial as it isn't required by FAA. We may need to look at it again. As I understand it the door leading to the cockpit has an electronic lock on it so that if the pilot is incapacitated you can obtain access by punching in the numbers...unfortunately, the door can be locked from the inside too. What I find interesting is that there is virtually no information on either of the pilots, no age, name and just the flight hours and years service for one of the pilots. Ebized
A bit worrying to hear this when I was flying back from Singapore on Tuesday, and passing not so far from the crash location and remember seeing our pilot (or his mate) passing through the cabin If it turns out there was a rogue individual in the cockpit then than that will not bode well for air travel, particularly when you wonder if a similar situation occured with the disappearnce of Malaysian flight MH370....... Adrian@TORQEN
Many probably died before the impact, heart attack. This and drowning on sea must be worst ways to go Terrifying!
Ekona
Oh I dunno, I would imagine being set on fire is probably the worst way. At least in a plane crash like this it's going to be over very, very quickly. Well, as long as you're sitting near the front, anyway. AliveBoy
The cockpit door switch is by the glasses on the centre console in this 360 degree view. http://www.viewat.or...pn&srch=cockpit Woah, that's a lot of switches! Although that one doesn't look somewhere you'd accidentally knock it.

Justthejedi
I can't to begin to imagine what those poor people were going through in those horrific 8 minutes diving back to earth, I only hope the g-force would render them all un-concience so they didn't feel anything.
Ekona
It wasn't a dive, it was a controlled descent. 3-4k ft per min is nothing, would feel just like when you come in to land (well, a bit quicker, but not by much). I'd have run around grabbing boobies

Ekona
Actually, you know what I'd do: I'd be a proper rebel and use my mobile phone while the plane is preparing to (crash) land! I know, I'm such a bad boy!

The last 8 minutes of the flight would have been terrible for those onboard, especially watching some trying to smash the door down before been slammed into a rock face at approx 400mph! All cockpit doors must be able to be opened from the cabin as part of the door/aircraft certification process. The decompression panels are generally too small to crawl through and/or are covered in a shroud to prevent access. Virtually all cabin windows are plug type and fit from inside the cabin so you would struggle to kick them out or even crack them. Two possible scenarios: The Pilot in the cockpit jammed the door shut to prevent access The door may have had a mechanical failure preventing opening - (sadly this is quite possible)
Ebized
At least in a plane crash like this it's going to be over very, very quickly. Well, as long as you're sitting near the front, anyway. Given we know organs/brain being violently compressed in car crashes at relatively low impact speeds will kill, think we know that a 400mph+ impact will mean it will be over for all "very, very, quickly" if, as others say, they haven't already passed out beforehand
Adrian@TORQEN
Let's just hope this is not another terrorism case or the pilot inside going suicidal.
