Nothing. Retired 21 months ago after 30 years in the Police Service.

You did well to last 30 years mate. I lost interest in the job in 93 when the Sheehy report started to change things.I managed another 5 years afterwards but it ruined the job. Lost a fair amount of benefits and my supplied accommodation was sold off with all local beat area knowledge moved to divisional stations and the strategic target mentality was born. Also longer shift times etc

And Sheehy was nothing compared to what the current government have done to the job !

Specialize in Cloud "Backup and Recovery" solutions /DR /CDR for Seagate. (Data Storage)

(at least 40% of you are storing your digital footprint on my kit) :) :)

Not mine, don't trust it.........

I'm an infrastructure engineer (mainly server and storage) for a financial services company

I hate giving someone else responsibility for my backups, if I've done it's either done right or I'm to blame :scare::lol:

The IT world is very quickly moving to cloud for everything, of course there are certain vertices where you can't, but the migration has begun.

Oh I know and we have several including one I look after..... Doesn't mean I trust someone else with my data or the responsibility of backing it up ;)

Some interesting jobs/carers in this thread

Wish I had received better guidance when younger to have better realisation of all that was out there, I would have followed another career course,

Maybe it's different nowadays but when I was at that age (mid 90's) it was rubbish guidance anyway. At the time I wanted to be a racing driver, gun smith or Police pursuit driver ~ in that order. :teeth::lol:

The guidance I received was rubbish as really the only legitimate job of those three was a Police pursuit driver but she didn't have a pamphlet about that so suggested the Military instead which although I did follow through with to some degree (passed physical tests/sat exams ~ was eligible for REME or the MP ~ my choice) it wasn't the right way forward for me as I liked being close to my family and wasn't interested in seeing the world.

Ended up working my way up in a "Brewers Fayre" Pub kitchen (wash boy/starters & desserts/commis chef/sous chef), then did a Toolmakers apprenticeship, then worked in a car garage then probably another 6 to 7 other jobs before finally finding a career I'm happy with so don't give up as it's never too late to try something new. ;)

I'm not techy at all but I thought that even the most massive companies entrusted their data to the cloud (whatever that may be  )?

"The cloud" can mean many things. As a consumer I'm just a little wary of trusting my backup to someone else for both privacy and recovery. I no longer have control over that data.

I'm a bit of a pessimist and in some ways control freak when it comes to stuff like that :)

My careers advice said I'd make a good mechanic or a doctor...

Agree ... and probably the most common objection .. but in reality, you keep your data on yours and I'll keep a 2nd copy for you (simplfying of course) ... But then you have 2 sets incase some may hack your home network, which - in honesty - doesnt have a billion $ spent on security and would be V much easier for someone to access than say a data centre /cloud. Currerntly your data is kept on one or two hdd, maybe even 4 or 5 with raid .. where as in a data centre it's across several thousand /encrypted.... and of course "data" isn't that naked picture of an ex ... it's 010110100010010100101101 :D .... it's incredible really what they (we?) can do now ... so many implications of what's to come...

(the royal "you" btw) :D :D .. J

@jud I agree with all your points, I said I'm a pessimist but paranoid is probably more appropriate

It's horses for courses and as you say for some it's ideal for secondary or tertiary backups providing you know the risks associated

Structural design or pictures? Sorry, I'm reverting to type (my previous career was in civil engineering). Am now a maths teacher. Now about those school designs.... One good one in my last school was the radiators in the ceiling!!

I'm a civil engineer working as an architect but my job title is 'Landscape Architect' ... rads in suspended ceiling - yea we do that !

I also own a Company called Architectural Restorations.

Will, do you have a website? It's something I have a keen interest in and it would be interesting to see some of the work you do.

Also what series of racing do you have cars in? What cars do you run? Any photos?

I own/run an IT support company for small businesses

Before that 12 years in the military as an electronics technician/satellite communications specialist were I went to strange and exotic lands (just like it said in the brochure) I met strange and exotic people (just like it said in the brochure) they shot at me! (that bit WAS NOT in the brochure :scare: )

Before that I was a farmer

EDIT: Missed the bit between farming and solider - I did a 2 year government sponsored apprenticeship as a mechanic like all of us got laid off the day the government stopped sponsorship - that's why I joined the army ;)
