Jetpilot
Looking at changing my daily, i have read about taxing in my name etc, but if its not insured, i cant tax it, but, cant insure it till i know which one i will buy, if you get me. I can obviously phone up and insure there and then when i find one i like, but how quick does this hit the database for me to then be able to tax it?

Ekona
You don't need insurance to be able to tax a car, just an MOT. Edited February 25, 2015 by Ekona
JetSet
but how quick does this hit the database for me to then be able to tax it? Should be immediate but I once insured my Clio at a brokers up the road and 15 minutes later when I got home The DVLA site wouldn't allow me to tax it. A couple of hours later when I tried again it was O.K. Pete

Ekona
You don't. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax You'll need: completed V11 reminder (or your V5C) MOT test certificate if required (must be valid when the tax starts) the payment shown on the reminder My insurance on the BMW wasn't shown on the MIB database until a week after, but I was able to do the VED the same day I bought the insurance and the car. Jetpilot
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-2520649/Need-insurance-certificate-buy-car-tax-axed.html That just shows what you need to be able to apply, not what you actually require to get tax. According to the abive for example: They will still have to have valid insurance but not asked to show it. Maybe it just checks the vehicle is insured on the database, not specifically in your name. Ekona
That just shows what you need to be able to apply, not what you actually require to get tax. That's the exact same thing! AskMID doesn't check your name either, it just checks the car. My car was not on the database, and no-ones is until they update it after about a week (for most insurers). That would make it impossible to buy VED under the new system. If the fact that the DVLA site itself doesn't convince you that you don't need insurance to tax your car though, nothing I can say will. Jetpilot
I will try to explain better, that just tells what you need to start the application, not whats required to get taxed. Both below say you still need insurance. https://online.postoffice.co.uk/webApp/CarTax http://ask.co-operativeinsurance.co.uk/help/car_insurance/tax_without_cert I guess i will find out
Ebized
No insurance required to get car taxed but you still need to have insurance - one of the benefits not having to arrange cover notes etc before you can buy tax. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dvla-cuts-unnecessary-red-tape-for-motorists

Bloody hell, even the post office link tells you exactly the same thing. The Co-Op link is wrong. The DVLA are correct.
