if you're not careful ........ I'll climb on that skirting board ladder and bite your ankle

Now I'm picturing you as a "Borrower" person.

Not going to sleep well tonight now for fear of you jumping out of a mouse hole & jabbing me in the eye with a knitting needle fashioned into a sword. :scare::D

What do you mean when? It's already started!

You have it coming matey ;)

I know and I'm looking forward to it. :surrender:

Fancy buying a low riding TVR roadster or similar car that will no doubt hurt my back, followed by starting an unsuccessful affair with a 20 something year old woman who will undoubtedly make me feel feeble & inadequate in bed.

Good times. :D

Amazing. What happened to people buying a crappy old car for their first car and running that for a few years to build up some NCB?

My first car was an old classic mini which was older than me and cost £20 to buy - which was the equivalent to a days work at the time. Insurance cost me £500 Third Party only which was the cheapest at the time. It wasnt until I was about 25 that I could afford the insurance on a quicker car and even then it wasnt cheap.

Similar experience here rabbitstew,

I started with a 1989 Mini which was probably the best first car I could ask for! Despite still desperately wanting a Z for my first car! ;)

Im 20 now with 2 years NCD and I've just managed to get my 350z with insurance costing £1k. I was expecting to have to wait untill I was 25 or so but the NCD really helped with the insurance.

My advice to Kizzyiee would be to use the comparison sites and try a few combinations such as saying you're only going to do 6000 miles as year etc.

Although I would not advise having a 350z as a first car, if you can afford to do it I know I would have done it!

Good Luck with it though! :D

I agree with you but imo it's not just about building up your NCB's it should be about building up your driving experience. ;)

I believe that there should be some sort of limit on new drivers to the engine size or performance of a vehicle that they can own/drive for at least the first year. After all we all have to use the roads and their mistake could injure themselves or worse kill them or someone else.

its not the power of the car that's the problem, its the person behind the wheel - a 1.0 corsa is still perfectly capable of doing 50 through a town centre, or 80mph down a country road and through a hedge.

we all want powerful cars for our first cars and its often not the cost of the car that's the problem, but the insurance - which should really be factored into the asking price.

To the OP, try all the usual comparison sites do the leg work and make lots of phone calls - I suspect admiral will come out cheapest, certainly were for me when I moved up to decent cars.

Totally agree. I think the statistics say that nearly everyone crashes during first year of driving. I know I did, twice.

Once on a roundabout when I presumed that the woman driving the car in front of me who had just pulled out onto a clear roundabout wasnt going to suddenly stop mid-roundabout for no reason at all. So I pulled out, looked right to make sure it was still clear and ran into back of her. Second time was as few weeks later when I was driving along, in a queue of traffic and some woman (im sure it was just a co-incidence that both accidents involved women drivers), drove straight out of a side road, across 2 lanes of on coming traffic and down a ditch. Everyone piled on their brakes and my crappy old mini only had drum brakes all around and just didnt stop in time. After then I learnt that whilst I felt I was a really good driver, other people might not be and so you have to double & triple check every time you pull out onto a round about, and also make sure you leave miles of room between you & the car ahead as you never know what some idiot up ahead will do.

Unfortunately the "limit" at the moment is purely as to whether the young driver can afford the insurance or not, and as we know the insurance premium is based purely on statistics rather than car engine size. I remember a few years back I used to see a lot of young lads driving cars like old 5 Series BMW`s or Jags, simply because whilst they had big engines and were clearly not slow, they were cheaper than trying to insure a Saxo or Corsa, as more of them had been involved in accidents.

Get an mx5 for a year and learn the characteristics of a rwd. Touch wood ul have a years ncb and valuable real world experience. Mx5 are plenty fun too, (Iv got one ☺ï¸)

This is good advice. Or an MR2 Mk2.

Can't fault your taste but I would NOT drop thousands on just insuring the beast, especially NOT fully comp, cos if you crash it, she's gone...!

Martin Lewis has some good car insurance guides...if you want to go this route...!

There no point in saying your going to do low mileage because if they would fit a box to it they can see.

Also if you do get a quote and you take it out, if you are thinking about modifying the Z i would recommend telling the insurance company about the mods which could push your premium even higher, however if you do not and have a crash it could void the insurance.

Best of luck with searching though im sure something will pop up

Getting quotes of around £4000... :scare:

Remember the price of the car your insuring too! The chances of you crashing it are pretty high as a new driver in a RWD motor with 280 bhp +( please don't take offence) well this is what the insurance company will think! I'm 23 and been driving since 18 and with Adrian flux I'm paying 680 a year with 3 years no claims! Which I'm happy with!

On the other hand going big will help you out in the future, build up those no claims in a 350 and later on in life you should be good :D just my thoughts anyway

I wish you the best of luck. I'm 27 and most insurers turned their nose up at me and that was with a clean licence and 5 years NCB

When I bought my zed I really struggled getting a decent insurance quote also. At the time I was paying about £170 to ensure a Golf GT TDI. I had quotes for about £500 odd to insure an E46 M3 I was looking at and even a quote of £460 for a lambo gallardo. But when I tried to insure the zed, it was a nightmare. I was 40, had 20 years ncb on the car. Had a long history of driving performance cars and high powered motorbikes and yet insurance companies just didnt want to know. I actually had companies refuse to insure me on a zed. The "specialist" companies on here were quoting me about £1200. Some suggested had my current car been something like a porsche or a subaru impreza or an evo then they would have quoted me less. In the end the cheapest quote I got was through Adrian Flux and that was £900 odd. Mental really, i just couldnt believe zeds were regarded as such a mega high risk compared to other performance cars. I even remember getting a quote of £480 to insure a brand new Nissan GTR and yet my 5 year old zed was twice the price to insure!

Funny reading this thread. I wasted £12k in 3 years on insurance for cars and motorbikes, ridiculous thinking about it now.

I paid £4600 for a 2006 M3 in 2008 when I was 22.

Was paying £1700 3 years ago for my JDM 350Z.

Getting quotes for a 2006 350Z UK car at £385 TPFT or £407 FC at 29 years of age, 4 years NCB and all my points off/don't have to declare due to time period.

To be young and stupid.........again.....

Wait until you are 44 and you can insure one for £176 for the year, about the only benefit of being old, dont worry too much as like the man above said, your time will come, dont miss out on lads holidays and stuff to run a fast car, it is kind of forcing it if you are paying a fortune for the insurance, get mobile and build some NCD.
