BRAND New rims... update. Now gone in for a refurb, after a week of ownership!!!!!!!

Nothing ever goes the way it should does it!!

Lets just say 2 of my 4 BRAND NEW rims have now gone to be refurbished.

Took them to Kwik fit today, fronts were done with no problem, tyres have a stretch to them but it does suit the alloy.

He then called me out of the reception and into the workshop.

He then showed me a tyre that they had tried to put on the rear, it was ripped and warped, and then explained that they do not have a tyre that will fit my rears safely. (without looking like it is going to split)

He then showed me my brand new alloy.. The design my new alloys have means that the spokes overlap the edge of the rim and therefore stick out quite a bit, even with a tyre on they will still be stuck out. Not really realising this they had put it on the tyre fitter thing, the clampy thing came down, tyre started spinning and it has sheered 3 of the 6 spokes. Taken paint clean off and chunks of the alloy itself.

I was given the choice of a £120 discount or they would pay for the refurb. I went with the discount as I thought the refurb will only cost me around £40... He then rested my 2 front wheels (which had tyres on) against the wall just by the door to a staff area.................. :headhurt: :headhurt: :headhurt: :headhurt: :headhurt:

Forgetting that he had put them there, he came flying in through the door, it swung right open, hit my wheels and one fell flat on its face. The guy, bless him, was obviously having a very bad day and held his head in his hands in dis-belief.

He has now agreed to pay for both to be re-furbished. My Dad was not happy when i got in and called the guy to organise to meet with him (it had gone 5 o'clock so they were closed), luckily he had not left work so back i went with my Daddy! (felt quite embarrassing) He demanded they buy and replace the 2 damaged alloys as they will not ever be the same after the refurb. The guy was adamant that you would not notice a difference and said he could not replace the wheels as he had already done a deal with me.

Nothing is ever easy!

Pictures of my sticky out spokes: (don't have any photos of them with the damage)

As you can see my spokes overlap the edge of the rim, thats is what got caught in the tyre machine.

New wheels is what is required really. They aren't just scuffed, they have taken chunks of metal off them due to incompetence.... As per KyleR... Seriously... Kwik Fit? They aren't cheap or competent???

Just because you said you were happy with a refurb is irrelevant, although you'd probably have to take them to the small claims if they didn't sort it our for you. Depends how intent you are on getting them replaced or having your hard earned new wheels trashed and then fixed? I take it you aren't going to let Kwik Fit refurb them?

Getting refurbished by a local specialist, as for why I went to quick fit... Had not used them before so I did not know any better! Plus they had 25% off!

looking at the design of the wheel , any competent tyre fitted would have realized that to fit the tyre they would need to go on the machine face down... i feel your pain mate and once the wheels have been sorted i would highly recommend using a PROPER tyre specialist

I have to ask this, because many others here will be thinking the same.....why on Earth did you go to Kwik Fit?!

Kwik Fit.

That is all...

When i read line 3 of your opening post MCook I knew what was coming. I have been beaten to it in the comments.

You will soon learn there are places that are for Car People, and then theres places for those who arnt.

Kwik Fit : The McDonalds of the motor industry.

Make sure you take times, dates, record conversations that have been had today. I've been in a similar situation like this before when verbal promises became a letter to Trading Standards because they ''forgot'' their fck up.

Sorry to hear all the same, I image you was really loking forward to getting these on.

Bad news mate, when I take the rear wheel off the Busa which has a 300x18 on it i tell them straight no marks or it's 1500 for a knew one do you want the job, luckily for me and them never a mark on it.

The problem you had was the guy doing it didn't give a @*!#, I also use a place up here in the Midlands that a proper cheapo tyre place but they looked after my rear 20s as if they were made from glass, next time it doesn't matter were you take them insist on watching, if you don't like anything tell them,

The guy actually ended up saying.. 'I realised now we should have done it up-side down'....... I am soon gutted!

Anyone hazard a guess to how long a refurb will take??! Considering one of the spokes is basically now flat level with the rim.

a refurb cant fix that new wheel time as it will be rather unbalanced i would imagine

Agree with above, if so much metal has been taken off, it's new wheel time, considering these are new wheels too.

KwikFit are a big enough chain, they should be able to cover the cost.

Dunno where you legally stand as you have already agreed to the refurb.

The customer should be put back in a position he was in before the negligence occurred, without betterment.

Personally I would say that a refurb should be fine, assuming the wheel still balances out okay without excessive weights (a couple is to be expected). If not, then a replacement will have to be sourced. The OP did the right thing IMHO, going off half cocked isn't going to help matters, although FFS man why on earth did you let your Dad go down there: Are you 12 or something?!

If the refurb works, then fine. If not, they'll need to replace.

But if the wheels have 5 spokes with one design and the 6th now has a new design due to fitter fault how can he be in the position as before?

unless its welded up and reshaped

What? Why would one wheel suddenly gain/lose a spoke between it leaving Kwik Fit and getting refurbed?

EDIT Hang on, I see what you mean now. Well, that depends on how good a job they do on the refurb, doesn't it? If it's all good then great, if not then that's a different matter.

Give them a chance to fix it first.
