Fodder
I've been looking at these recently, I'm waiting to see a little more about the apple watch however I suspect it will require to be paired with an iPhone at all times rather than synced. I can't run due to a fused ankle and the gym bores me rigid so I try to get out and cycle quite a bit. I'd also like to swim more and I suspect the apple watch won't be water proof so will probably start looking at alternatives. I have a couple of friends who swear by Fitbit but I've not done any research as to which model if any is applicable to my requirements and usage. My main reason for posting is to say thanks and I'm reading all the advice too

GMballistic
GMBallistic, I've only just seen your link Don't think I want to discuss that particular form of exercise on here but thanks for the link anyway That's ok. Most fun exercise you can do though. Erm, I can't really argue with that, especially if I compare it with the boredom that is the gym Don't get me started on gyms. I can't stand them and so do all my exercising at home using body weight exercises, dumbbells & barbells. I mean I wish I had the access to all the equipment a good gym affords you but just don't want to have to be in the same room as "some" of the people that frequent gyms. Kraziekatz1
To be honest unless you do some serious running or cycling and want to track your progress for improving fitness and achieving targets, then I think the fitness bands are all a bit of a gimmick. For basic stuff I just use Nike Fitness plus which comes with pretty much all iPhones and iPods and is really simple to use. For more advanced stuff there are various apps and websites that track your route/speed/elevation/HR etc. I'm not sure wearing a fitness band will motivate you Have you tried Wii Fit? Swimming? Local fitness classes? Good luck x Thanks Kraziekatz I've tried using my iphone but I never seem to have anything with pockets in to carry the thing around with me so I gave up on that. The wristband sounds much easier to just put on and forget about and I like the idea of it monitoring how much sleep I am getting. My sleeping habits have gone really weird lately and I can't remember when I actually slept all night. I always end up wide awake and grabbing my Kindle to read or listen to the radio. I do quite a lot of swimming but our club pool is closed now until the middle of January for refurbishment so I must, must, must go in the gym more and I think (hope!!) the wristband thingy will make me compete against myself to do a bit more each day because I can be a bit unfocused if I'm honest. Oh ok, I have a cuff strap for my iPod so fairly easy to manage. Don't talk to me about sleep though......have two small children, it's been a very very long time since I had a decent nights sleep lol
rabbitstew
rabbitstew, that sounds positive and exactly what I need Mudman, the first two gadgets sound a bit complicated for my tiny brain and, I'm guessing, I really don't need anything that 'in depth' since I'll only be riding/swimming/walking/playing badminton rather than running? Will investigate the last one though so thanks Although worth noting that the jawbone up24 which ive got, whilst its sweat and shower proof, its not waterproof for swimming. I got mine from amazon, was half price at the time. You get different sizes depending up on your wrist size. The sleep thing I found really interesting. Half the time I cant remember what time I went to bed or woke up. But it cleverly knows how many times you woke up in the night, did you have deep or light sleep and what time you woke up etc. You can then compare each day along with your moods and how you feel to see if theres any patterns etc. Also finding out how active/not active I am was interesting. I knew when im at home im always rushing about hoovering, cleaning, cooking, washing etc but didnt realise that if im at home for a day i may do 15,000 steps in that day, and yet on a day when im on at work I only do about 5000 steps! So that kind of motivates me to have a 3 mile lunchtime walk, or like this morning, I got up at 6am and did a 4 mile run before getting to the office.
twobears
Shame it's not waterproof because when I swim I really go for it! Interesting to discover that you are so much less active when you're working. I am quite 'busy' when I'm at home too although living in a flat with no stairs is probably not giving me as much exercise as being at home in Yorkshire. I think it will be interesting to find out how I sleep and compare it with my moods because sometimes I feel exhausted when I wake up and I'm sure that makes me lethargic and moody for the entire morning sometimes. I went to the gym this morning and had quite a good workout (well for me it was good) but then spoilt it all by ordering myself a dish of fat chips with mayo. Damn. I must NOT do that again. p.s. should add that I have gone for the Jawbone Up24 as well and got £25 off it at Boots.Have ordered a medium although my wrists are pretty small so I'm hoping it won't be too big. I think the calories I burnt off probably didn't equate to the ones I ingested at lunchtime I have been very good for the remainder of the day though and took myself off for a walk lasting well over an hour this evening so that should help a bit. I can't wait to get home tomorrow and start riding my lovely pony again. Much more fun than rowing machines et al

bronzee
Getting out for a regular walk a few times a week will do you good without pounding your joints as much. Obviously this will become a little more challenging with your lovely winter climate. A good way to motivate yourself if motivation is an issue is team up with a friend for gyming or walking, double bonus as it will pass time more quickly, you'll probably enjoy it more.
