Cholula
Le Grande Dame is very poorly... Just had news back from Nissan Dealer with full diagnostic check. Code P0340 ABS code C1130 Apparently my main timing chain is stretched (should be 10mm, is 16-17mm). They've said I need a new timing chain kit and it will cost £1500 - £1600. Which I don't have. I've read through various threads about the cam sensor code. Is it possible the wool could be getting pulled over my eyes regarding the "replacement of the timing chain kit". I've had issues like this before, i.e. wool getting pulled over my eyes, I'm blonde and female and they can see me coming!! What do you think. Background to Cholula going to the garage. Came out of works car park on Wednesday night, turned left, stalled the engine, car started again, just thought it was me! About 5 minutes down the road, car stalled while driving. Was it me, was I having a bad day. Stopped and had a chat to the other half on the phone. Checked the battery was connected - was ok. Drove home, everything alright. Went into Asda. Stopped the car. Started her up again. Stuttered, bit rough, but started. Thought I'd get the shopping and let her cool off. Back to car about 20 mins later. Started her up - stuttered, bit rough, but started. Malfunction indicator light on, ESP off light on and TCS light on. Drives alright (although I've been driving her like Driving Miss Daisy), except for a bit rough starting, 3 lights as above on all the time. What are your thoughts? I've been looking for a Nissan Specialist in Scotland that can do the work - or at least look at it, without fleecing me.
350 Russ
I'm no expert but if the chain stretched then it should lunch the engine not just run rough, I'd personally be looking for a second opinion as it could quite easily be just a cam sensor. Also I've been on here for 5 years and I haven't heard of a chain stretching yet.
Grundy
I'd straight away avoid Nissan Main Dealer, as I'm sure everyone else would advice. Lots of guys up North who should be along shortly to advice what to do and where to go
Payco
I second Grundy's comments. Dont even think about getting it costed by a Nissan main dealer. Their labour charges and parts prices are from a different planet..
Tricky-Ricky
Cam position sensor is a known problem with this engine, so worth taking it somewhere that will listen to and act on the info rather than just quote you a new chain and then you would likely be back again with the same problem. brillomaster
http://engine-codes.com/p0340_nissan.html have a read of that, sounds like a camshaft position sensor to me. definitely try changing that first before moving onto anything else! Cholula
Thanks Brillomaster. I read that - someone else is also having fault code issues. And yes the sensor seems to be a known problem. How would they know if the timing chain has stretched. They did say that it doesn't happen very often and that they have only heard of 2 other cars having the same problem. I also phoned another garage and asked if they could do the work - replace the timing chain, but they said it needs to be a Nissan specialists due to the set up of the computer. Me - I haven't got a clue. I can do basics, water, petrol, oil, but thats about it. Anyone know of someone who can look at it and tell me honestly whats wrong and what needs fixing. Scotland if possible.

Mike1989
I had a very similar experience bud, mine was the timing chain! It cost me £1500 fitted with a full p3 service. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon!
ZMANALEX
Cam position sensor is a common issue and stretched main chain and cam chains are also becoming quite common especially on higher mileage cars. The easy way to check your main chain is to remove the front inspection plate and check how far out the hydraulic main chain tensioner pad is. This check will remove any guess work and will determine if the main chain is worn out with oem tolerances or not. It is a 15 minute check and I am based in the Perth area if you would like me to have a quick look. Also no computer work required to replace the chain/chains. Alex. What Nissan dealer did you use in Edinburgh ? Alex. Edited December 1, 2014 by ZMANALEX
