terry06
Hi guys my daily driver (Saxo VTS) decided that it no longer wants one of its cogs, chewed it up and spat it through the casing! My question is can any of you recommended a decent place to get a reconditioned gearbox? I have considered getting a used one but unless you see it on another car you don't really know what you're getting until you fit it
Lexx
For the cost of a second hand box on a car that's probably not worth all that much versus the cost of reconditioning a box you may as well get a used one.
Tim BW
Sorry to hear this. Hope you get it sorted.
terry06
I see what you're saying but finding a box is proving to be harder than expected, I know I can fit one from any Saxo but want the correct ratio's for the VTS. There's a couple about but going for ~£100 and I have had friends who have got 2nd hand boxes that lasted only a couple of months. So for the price of 2-3 2nd hand boxes a re-con seems to make a bit more sense
Lexx
Fair enough. A friend once used M and T transmissions in Sheffield to rebuild a Corvette box. So far as I know it's still going strong. No idea what it cost though. GRGB in Bristol (or Bath - somewhere round there) are supposed to be ok too.
terry06
Thanks will try them, from what I have found it should cost ~£350 but not sure whether that's for a box or whether that's for them to recondition my existing box (in which case I don't think it's possible since it has a big hole in the side!) 2nd hand box may be my only choice
Paddy78
I don't know much about reconditioning gearboxes, but if it has a hole in the side, then surely another box is required?

That's what I'm saying. I am just unsure on whether these reconditioned gearbox places provide you with another gearbox or do they take your existing one and recondition that? (Obviously in my case that is not possible ) Will try ringing a few up in my lunch break, just thought I would ask on here for any recommendations on decent companies
Paddy78
Unless they are Saxo specialists, then they'd probably recondition your box. Worth a call to find out? Have you tried Saxo forums... If such an ungodly place exists?

Have you tried Saxo forums... If such an ungodly place exists? They do exist, and as you'd expect it's a bit Maxpower! The suggestions on there pretty much revolve around: "stick a 1.1 box on it m8, shorter ratio's for better 0-60 init" Although there are some good guys and cars on there it has to be said, especially the track guys
gillywig2
Does the Pug 106 gti use the same box? I think the engines are the same.
terry06
Does the Pug 106 gti use the same box? I think the engines are the same. They do indeed, but seem quite hard to come by. All 106/saxo boxes will fit, it's just the ratio's that are different. Since the saxo is supposed to be my daily I have decided to just risk a 2nd hand box from a VTR (despite the looooong ratio's) to get it back on the road and avoid using the zed in this crappy weather
