Grundy
Anyone on here have much insight to this? Just done a check as I know I've never been able to get a credit card - I was approved for a loan and over draft though. With the possibility of moving out shortly, the agency mentioned they need a fee for references etc and a credit check which rang alarm bells in my head. I've just gone onto Equifax and found out my rating is poor Score of 365 - which I believe is 2 points away from OKAY) this is down to me being a bit of an idiot a good few years ago when I was unemployed. Lets just say I racked up a £500 bill with the bank that I didn't pay straight away. Anyway, it says on my record I've had 28 months without incident. This is the only thing causing me an issue. What can I do? I haven't told the estate agents yet, should I? when I queried it, he said if it go rejected, he can talk to the owners of the property and see if they still want to take me on. Flex
I think you can ask for a note to be put on your credit file as to what happened. Might help. Also depends on who they use fr credit ref as some will vary a little.
rabbitstew
I was once told to get a credit card (even if its only got a £100 limit), then use that for all my monthly outgoings, and keep paying it of every month. That would help build up a good credit history, which would offset any historical problems you might have had.

You could get one of the more lenient ones that charge like 50000% interest, as long as it's cleared in full you wont pay hyper interest and it will help your score. rabbitstew
^^^^^ thats what i was thinking, or even apply via your own bank. Your own bank can surely see what you have going in & out and if you have been "good" for the last 2 years etc then they might give you a card with a very low limit. EDIT: The other thing to watch out for is doing too many credit checks. Each time you do a check its flagged and if you do too many it can affect your rating. My mate had exactly this when he went to buy a new motorbike on finance. He went out and bought leathers, helmet, boots, new mobile phone but then when he came to sign up for the actual motorbike it was rejected due to too many credit checks over that month. Took him a while to sort it out but he got the bike in the end. Edited September 17, 2014 by rabbitstew
AliveBoy
Just be careful as certain things damage it hugely. I know that payday loans effectively drop your credit rating off the chart and certain "low credit rating credit cards" do the same too.
