My fairladys speedo? Not quite sure!

I'm new to the forum and not had my fairlady long either so go easy on me please!

The speedo is In kph and only actually goes up to just over 180 which in mph is only 120 (ruffle, sorry if my maths are out)!

This surly isn't right? It can't be as I'v had the pin right round! Is this normal in the 2002 fairladys? If this is an odd situation I'll grab a picture tomorrow!

Can anyone shed some light on this and how would I go about changing it over to mph and it being accurate?

Hope I'm not sounding too thick here!

Normally when they bring in JDM cars then VOSA will convert the speedo to mph - even if they leave the dial the same it should have been converted to mph

However, if it wasn't brought in by a dealer and an individual imported her, you might have an issue as cars in Japan are limited to 112mph (I think, perhaps someone else can confirm this) so a 180kph speedo may be the usual Japanese issue one.

This normally works out OK, provided the speedo has been re-set by VOSA on import as the usual max for the cars (when the limiter is removed) is 155 to 160mph and that fits pretty well on a 180 max dial.

First thing is to check your speedo is reading correctly - if you have to convert kph to mph in your head all the time you're going to have plod on your back bumper if you make an arithmetic error.

Japanese domestic market cars are limited to 120mph I believe so this will be why the speedo is as it is.

The horsepower limit was lifted in 2004 but the speed limit of 190 km/h (118.1 mph) remains in effect. Many JDM cars have speedometers that register up to 180 km/h (111.8 mph) (certain Nissans go up to 190 km/h, and the GT-R has a mechanism that removes the speed limiter on a track) but all have speed limiters.

Sorry to sound so thick, learning as I go to be honest! So shall I get it back in the garage and get someone to have a look and see if it's limited as jap law and if so get it all converted to mph and uk law?

Thank you for your help!

There are a few specialised service providers that can do a calibration on your speedo and reset the kph to mph may be worth having a chat. I was under impression that to get a V5 with a UK reg no that this had to be done plus the foglight. Most JDM's have a black square sticker over k/ of the k/m display on the speedo . The 112mph limit can be removed with an uprev which I would class as the must do mod as the performance in lower gears is totally revitalised

My mum has an import Celica which has been UK registered and it is still in KPH, never failed an MOT, it has the fog light though. She has a piece of paper stuck to the speedo giving the conversions for the main speeds

VOSA have nothing to do with speedo conversion, the kits are freely available and most of the time the import company will convert the speedo for a fee although mostly all they do is convert the workings and just put an M sticker over the K sticker. To pass the SVA/IVA at the moment the guidelines say that it should show mph although in the past not sure that was the case as there are quite a few imports that came in 5 or 10 years ago still driving around in KPH.

It's definitely limited to just over 180kph! This is a guess but guessing the limiter is on the revs because in 6th hitting 4000 revs you can really feel it cut in!

So what's the port of call now?

Thank you so much for re advice so far!

Get the car down to Abbey/H-Dev/RS for a remap to remove the limiter

But unless you are running it on track it shouldn't be inconveniencing you on public roads....

Yep take the car to H-Dev/RS for a remap

Pretty sure Bobby is based in Germany currently (from reading another thread of his) so it may be a bit of a trip to H.Dev or similar. ;)

UpRev/Remap is definitely the way forward though.

Yep, based in Germany but more than happy when on leave to get my self over to some one that can help get her to where I want to get her! So when I find out. When my next bit of leave is I'll give them a phone! Can this company also convert the speedo?

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit thick but having an import is all new to me but living her!

Coldel your right if in the uk but you can have some fun on a few parts of these auto barns haha!

Would be fine if I was here forever but I'm not, so get this revup/ remap done and get it converted to mph is where I'm going to start I think! Thank you for all your help! When I find out when I'm on leave next I'll give the companies on here a ring and see what they can do!

Will they be able to convert to mph as well as the rev up?

Some maybe able to, ...you'll just have to ask them sorry as I don't know.;)

Cheapest option is to buy a converter chip which you wire in line with the speedo i.e http://www.svaspeedo...oduct_info.html, you dont need an uprev to do it. I have had quite a few jdm imports and this always did the trick (car still thinks its doing kph so limiter effectively removed)). However, for some reason i had problems with one for the 350z, the needle would bounce when stationary and i know a couple of others have had the same problem.

Easiest solution is to buy a Uk 350z instrument cluster (speedo/rev counter etc) Its a straight swap and you get mph & kmh dial without a dodgy mph sticker placed over the kmh, which as it goes never passed the sva as the it didnt light up at night, most people just blacked out the k, which passed sva.

Swap out the 3 gauge cluster too as Aliveboy says, its a straight swap :)
