Noise after new clutch. I should have listened....

Hi,

Before anyone says 'I told you so...' I know I should have listened. I needed my new clutch fitting and I asked advice on where on should go here: http://www.350z-uk.c...-clutch-fitted/ Some people said it could be a risk but l decided to take the easy route and listen to what I wanted to hear. To be fair, I thought I would be ok to go a clutch specialist get my new clutch fitted but I guess was wrong :scare:

I thought everything was good because the car drives great however after listening to it tick over tonight I can hear knocking and whirring noise which sounds like the release bearing when the clutch is not down. When I put my foot down on the clutch the noise goes away.

The car seems to drive great but this noise sounds bad. I did have a new release bearing, Exedy OEM spec clutch kit, LUK flywheel, spigot bearing, slave cylinder and SS clutch line fitted.

I can take it back but if anyone has idea of what could have gone from info I provided wrong, it would be a big help!

I can make a sound recording if it picks it up and it would be useful?

I went to out to make a recording but it's stop doing it for now. I guess it may only happen when after a long drive. I do notice a difference on sound with the clutch pressed or not pressed. I can't say if it's more than normal or not. When I turn the engine off I hear it knocking again as the engine dies.

Although it didn't happen to me before, I read on another Z forum that the rattling can happen when you turn the engine off and pressing the clutch in when you turn the engine off solves this.

I just went to try this, turned the engine on and off without pressing the clutch and got the rattle. Tried with the clutch pressed and it's gone. Whatever that rattle is, it's the same rattle/knocking I could hear at tick over with the clutch released after a long journey. I can't hear it at tick over anymore. No doubt it would return if I drove the car.

Did you actually see them replace all the parts that they say they have replaced and did you see all the old parts?

Did you supply all the parts ? if so then they may use that as an out.

I would make them aware that you have "noise" issues and make an appointment for next week so that they can inspect your car.

In the meantime put some miles on it over the weekend to allow everything to bed in, however I suspect that they will have to pull the box again.

Alex. :)

Thanks, I'll give them a ring.

You'd think it wouldn't be too much to ask to get a clutch fitted without having to go a Z specialist. Others agreed too but obviously I was wrong.

I was looking for advice on what to do next, not what I should have done after the fact.

I've spoke to them on the phone. They said bring it in as soon as it makes the noise again. I have the old clutch and flywheel they replaced but not the old release bearing but the old release bearing was quiet anyway so even if they didn't replace it, it wasn't making that sound. The manager did assure me he replaced all the parts. It certainly feels like everythings new when I use the clutch.

If the gearbox has to come off again, I'll be there to check the parts were replaced, that's for sure.

I'll have fun doing some miles and see or rather hear what happens.

Hmmm..I learnt this same mistake years back. I took my hot hatch to a national clutch chain for a new clutch and they made a right mess of it. Car caught fire as i drove it away as they had left sound proofing touching the exhaust downpipes, they hadnt reconnected a boost pipe on the turbo so the car was dangerously over boosting and I actually found 2 bolts from the gearbox housing left in the rain gutter under the bonnet rather than being put back in the gearbox. This was after the job actually already took them 4 days to do (they initially said 1 days work) after they told me that had cross threaded some of the gearbox bolts and had to tap them out.

Next time i needed a clutch I went to someone who specialised in my make/model of car and they did the job in a few hours!

I went for a long drive again today and the noise is back. I recorded it with my webcam but the sound doesn't pick up that well although you can hear it a bit, it's louder when you're next to it.

It sounds like something rattling when the clutch is not pressed in.

My fans goes off after 1 minute, 7 seconds and you can hear it a bit better

Any ideas what it is?
