-Bradders-
mine just twisted off with a bit of brute force! i didnt need to hold anything with mole grips Edited August 21, 2014 by -Bradders-
coldel
Best to put the molegrips on the base as you can twist the shaft and damage the gearing if you do not secure it.
SJ350z
Alright Hercules lol. Gonna have a few more tries at this. The guide on here sais take the ac unit up and grip the bottom lol
-Bradders-
maybe thats why my gearbox feels nackered lol
SJ350z
Ok its not budging at all going to have to borrow some tools off a friend. Such a pain in the a$$ lol
Grundy
Hmmm... when I did mine, lifted up the plastic around the gaitor. Grapped the shaft which is covered in 'cotton wool' then just twisted the top. I can't remember but do these screw opposite way?
tatooandy67
I had to use a pair of grips on the shaft below the gear knob and got a pal to force the gear knob round from the passenger side as I couldn't get enough leverage on my own too much lock tight from the factory maybe, was extremely difficult to remove and unfortunately the oem gear knob was destroyed during removal but was well worth the effort as my replacement is great. I think there is a how to on here somewhere which describes using 2 pairs of grips, be careful not to twist the shaft as may cause damage, good luck
SJ350z
Yeah I checked the guide and cant get the leverage. Pliers are useless and I'm not strong enough using my left arm. Don't want to damage anything so have to be careful lol
rothers2901
When i did the guide and removed the knob i found that it had been loctited into place hence could be a little tight.

ZMANALEX
If the methods as described above do not work for you then just remove the bolt and nut from the gear shift linkage and remove from the car the complete shifter. Then just clamp it in a vice and screw off the the shift knob. Alex.
Tinyflier
Try tightening it, that can sometimes break the seal if it has been put on with Loctite or by a Sumo wrestler who happened to be passing the build line. I had to use two BIG BIG grips on mine and it did destroy the leather but as I was replacing it I didn't mind.
