nievelc
Hi - I have come over from FCCUK after owning a 20VT, it was time for a change. Landed myself a '05 with 80k on the clock and a pair of wonkey exhausts. Done: * To ease the paranoia the first thing I did was take it to Abbey for a full P3 service * Spent the weekend changing replacing brakes (cheers Cougar) for EBC yellow stuff - uber grippy now and no grinding noise. * Cleaned the throttle body to solve engine stalling on warm start + did the full ecu and accelerator pedal reset, etc and the car is now pulling like a train, and starts properly every time. To do: * Exhaust - sounds awesome but one side is hard up against the bumper, have checked on here and Toyosports have a history of being a bad fit - thinking of taking it to Mr Exhaust or Kwik fit to try and reposition and modify - do you think this is would be worth the time or is it purely down to the fitter? * Exhaust - CAT heat shield - have read various posts that when corroded they are fine to take off, Scott @ Abbey said I could take off, it's sounds easy enough but I am sure it was designed with it in mind for a reason - has anyone disposed of the heat shields and not had problems over a long term, does it get a bit hot in the cabin on a long drive? Great forum, invaluable information

Toon Chris
I barely have a heat shield left on the car, they have all wobbled off over time. Welcome

GMballistic
Welcome aboard. If you are lucky you may be able to sort out the exhaust with some persuasive leverage and bending, ..otherwise you may have to live with it or just sell it on and get something half decent which tbh is what I'd do. I've got HFC's (High Flow CAT's) and there aren't any heat shields on those so I'd imagine you will be fine. Doesn't get hot for me in the cabin but when you get out of the car after a long drive you can definitely feel the heat wave. Not a problem though. ZMANALEX
to the forum, and you will be fine without the heat shields.
nievelc
After a 3 hour drive over the weekend i got out and defiantly felt the heatwave from underneath! Mr Exhaust quoted £140 to sort the exhaust issue, which frankly at the moment is a cosmetic issue for those with a sharp eye, which could turn into a problem. Will remove what is left of the shield for the time being Higher on the agenda is a rolling road to check the output I am still not convinced it is pushing anything near what it should be, with that said I am used to driving a turbo charged coupe which has a distinctly different power delivery, worth it for the peace of mind in any case I think - any local to South London, Croydon Area in particular? The 350Z will not feel much faster (if at all) than your 20VT, especially if you had changed the boost on your 20VT. Handling will be much better though. Owned a couple of 20VT's myself, love them and getting very hard to find a good one now.
craigm
Aftermarket exhaust all have different fits, I found only the high quality versions gave the best fit. You could look at a different hanger for the back box to sit it lower? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
nievelc
Talk about bringing up the past, after a year of wondering why my Z was so slow and having small gains with various repairs. I think i have finally sorted everything, car is now mint! Had the car go to Abbey for a new clutch, left with a new flywheel, and xy pipe (other was apparently toast) got the car on the road and my god, uncontrollable monster! I've come to love the power delivery of the NA over the forced induction and 100% agree with Ponsonby handling is a whole different level to the coop, though large roundabouts in the wet are enough to brown my pants if im not careful! HiddenWomble
gratz on getting your zed driving as she should one of the reasons i went for the zed over others is the flat torque curve, just really fancied having all that raw grunt over the bulk of the rev range
