KyleR
Which would you opt for? Feel free to offer up another suggestion if you think there is something better, I'm having trouble deciding which direction I'd like to take. 370Ad
Wow didn't know you could lower mileage 997's for 20k now. Cayman didnt feel special to me so I would say there is no contest personally!

AliveBoy
Wouldn't it have to be the E92 BMW M3 Coupe? They're just under 20k now for the 2007 version, not really a huge fan of them, but for £20k thats a HUGE amount of bang for your buck! hensh65
Thought 20K would get you a newer cayman than that, obv not!
delz0r
Cayman S or E92 M3 would be my pick, with a bigger budget next would be a GTR.
370Ad
E92 is the boring IT man choice. I know as there is about 10 of them in my car park. At least a C2S would be a little different.

Ekona
If you can adjust your brain to the layout, you'll find the 911 to be just about the most rewarding car to drive quickly ever. If you can't, then the Cayman is best balanced sports coupe for sensible money. The 997 is so much better than the M3, it's not even funny. The only other thing I'd suggest is an Elise, purely because it's something every petrolhead should own once in their life. Ultimately the drive will make the decision for you, as well as the 5% risk on all M97 engines, but I used to detest Porsches until I actually drove one. Now I don't ever want to be without a 911, which will make next month all the more sad.

WINKJ
When I used to work as an instructor for a track day company there were many a car I would drive.... and! I would suggest that you get a used ariel atom for pure driving fun!!!! shame about the lack of boot and roof!! edit: and the lack of everything else!! haha Edited August 8, 2014 by WINKJ
Ekona
On a serious note, a 997 is likely to lose less over a given period than anything else mentioned here, except maybe the Elise or Atom. Might be worth thinking about. M6 is also that kind of money, and is one of my personal favourites.

Ekona
VW are white goods. If Kia are like Logik (cheap and cheerful, and much better than they used to be), and Toyota like Hotpoint (only bought because they used to be good), then VW are like Miele (presumptuous, expensive, better quality but not by that much that you should be spending that much extra).

I am getting a shot of my mates brand spank Golf R tonight with the DSG box. Very curious to see how nippy it is but not matter how impressed I will be its still a Golf... jjt
I was in this exact predicament recently; I originally fancied the M3 V8, but the running costs such as servicing put me off as well as the blandish looks. I've really enjoyed my new Cayman S since I got it, Kyle PM me if you have any questions

Personally, I think it's a great car with masses of appeal for those who want a do-everything hot hatch, but I couldn't imagine myself shelling out that sort of money for one.
Jp606
Out of them two, definitely the 997.

I will drop you a pm after I get a shot, I let him take my car up the drag strip so that must mean I am allowed to rag his car. It has less than 1000 miles on it so I doubt its anywhere near ready to be put to the test!
KyleR
It's uncanny how many of your suggestions were on my list that I've now narrowed down to the 2 Porkers. E92 M3 and E64 M6 are both in budget and both available for sale not too far from me, but this is a toy car, to be driven on nice weekends and for fun, so I think the M's are a little too "4 seater saloon" The lotus is a good shout and I've noticed a couple for sale recently for £10k or under, but it must be yellow for me and the only 2 worth talking about over here are silver and green. I'd like to know a bit more about them before looking seriously at them but I do agree that it's a must own car, as is a 911 Jjt, thanks for the offer, I may give you a shout Ekona, have you driven much in a Cayman to compare to the 997? The seal issues are pretty scary with these 2 and apparently there's no easy way to check. However there is a 55k Cayman for about £15k so that would leave me some cash to bring it to a specialist to fit new seals for peace of mind, maybe. GMballistic
Out of the two Porsches I like the 997 best personally. They both pretty much look the same though. ;) What about a Lotus Exige?
