Rock_Steady
I was cleaning the engine of my Gt-four (Toyota) yesterday. whilst doing so I noticed what looked like flecks of paint, or maybe it was dust on the cold starter housing. Hmmm, there's only one way to find out what it is, and that's to run you finger along the said part. so I did but what I didn't know or notice was the metal gasket between the 2 parts was raised slightly which almost looped off my finger tip! A squirt of blood similar to that of the las vegas fountains shot across the engine bay and I panicked. I ran in the house and ran it under the cold water tap grimacing in pain and saying a few choice words, the wife came into the kitchen to see what all the fuss was about and almost fainted. fat lot of help she was, so my dad had to take me to A & E. I pressed the finger together so hard to stop the bleeding that after 30 mins my finger didn't fall off or open up... I felt a bit stupid going to A & E with what looked like a perfectly good nose picker but my dad insisted that I go and get it checked out. Surprisingly I didn't need stitches as it had sealed itself amazingly well. they put some anti-bacterial gel on it, with a bandage that makes my finger look like ET's. They sent me on my way and that was that but sweet jesus. Really nasty. So children, be sure to check what lurks beneath the bonnet when cleaning up the bay!

Tricky-Ricky
Man up! i just use masking or insulation tape if it bleeds enough to get I'm my way, if not i just let it fill up with oil/grease that usually stops the bleeding.
Toon Chris
Press together or on the wound very firmly to stop the bleeding. Any remaining 'flaps' use super glue (preferably IMO a gel type) which will stop it opening up for a few days. When the glue fails, repeat. I took most of my index finger nail off with a Stanley knife when fitting a carpet the other weekend. Never mind the wife, I nearly fainted as I though the entire finger end had been lopped off and I was pretty green by the time she arrived on the scene, summoned by the repeated swearing. Whereupon she uttered the helpful, loving and consoling words of "none of it went on the carpet did it?" To the OP - the lesson is, if it aint broke, don't touch
Rock_Steady
well, in my defence of being a bit of an old lady about it, it was to the bone and I have lost some feeling in the end of it. Do I qualify for a medal the size of a frying pan for manly braveness?
Suits
Ha ha, after years of office work I now have fingers as soft as a babies bum too. I did the same running my finger down some under bonnet sound proofing on my S2000. Sort of like; 'Oh look, that looks like blood' 'It is blood' 'Lots of it' 'My blood.' nowhereboy
haha! Reminds me of something that happened to my mam last week. She was helping me put a carpet in my living room and she slipped with the stanley knife and litteraly jabbed it into her arm. The blood was squirting out a good few feet away from her, I can laugh about it now but it was really scary. Turned out she hit an artery! it also turns out I'm useless in an emergancy
rabbitstew
Must be that time of year, on Saturday i went into the garage and saw one of my big 40mm impact sockets on the floor which id been using in the vice to help press a wheel bearing out. I picked it up and instinctively run my hand around it to wipe off any muck only to feel a sharp stabbing pain in the palm of my hand between my thumb and finger. Pull socket away and see a shard of barbed metal had gone straight in off where id been hitting the socket, went straight through the fleshy bit of hand there and nearly out of the other side. I tried to pull on it and as it was barbed it wasnt going anywhere. I had a moments debate whether to get the pliers on it and rip it straight out, whether to go to A&E or whether to except my excited wifes offer to help. Baring in mind she loves gory extreme ER programs on the telly I quickly ruled her out of the list of options. In the end I slowly (and very painfully) managed to pull it out by gently but firmly wiggling it about and pulling hard - but it took forever. At one point i wondered if it was going to be easier just pushing it through and out the other side. In the end it was a bit about 3cm long! Still, once it was out I had to have quite a few whiskies (for medical reasons obviously).
