hensh65
I am not lucky enough to have 10K sitting spare to blow on a track car but I could easily blow it within an hour if I did What would you do if you had 10K to buy and build a track car? What car and how much? Engine mods and cost? Handling mods and roll cage, how much? Costs can be rough or as exact depending on how much time you want to waste dreaming
Flex
I'd just buy someone's who'd put a load of money into it. Not sure what though.

Suits
Probably just my 370, just with an oil cooler and sets of tyres. Probably a set of serious coilovers and a personal geo set up. Then spend the other £5000 on track time. Really getting to love my car now.

I'd keep my 350 and spend £1500 on a roll cage, £1000 on suspension improvements, £1000 on wheels (used!) and then the rest on a big V8 if that was the option

brillomaster
hmm, basically what we're doing already, except with a better starting car, so... high mileage BMW E46 M3 - £6000 secondhand set of wheels and decent trackday tyres - £700 decent discs, brake pads and fluid - £500 Coilovers, antiroll bars and camber kits - £1000 Bucket seats and harnesses - £600 Exhaust and breathing mods - £800 BGW - £400 total £10,000. however that's a bit pricey, so what we'll be doing instead... high mileage BMW E46 330ci - £1030 Brake discs, pads and fluid - £270 trackday tyres - £380 suspension - staying standard - £0 bucket seats - £200 total £1,880, lets roll
hensh65
How long do you think it will be before the 350 is a common track day car? What I mean is, if you go to any of the open track days you tend to find tones of Clios mx-5s etc because they are cheap to buy and get track ready and also a bundle of fun. I've noticed the likes EP3 falling into this cat as they are also becoming cheap to obtain. The 350z can't be far away from the average punter being able to buy with the sole purpose of track toy? Suits
Thing with 350's is that the consumables are expensive. Tyres & Petrol. Compared to the other 2.L motors you mentioned.

It's drawback is you need to do a fair bit to counter the cars large weight. Clio's MX-5's, Civics are fairly light cars compared to the 350z, I guess, once it's price is routinely under say 3k it will become more attractive. I use mine as a track car as I have nothing else I can use, I love it, but it's been hard work and has cost me way more than if I used a 3 series BM or an S13/S14 etc
docwra
Totally, one of the reasons Im moving mine on is the cost of replacing 2 19 inch tyres every other trackday, it generally does twice the fuel of the Clios and stuff as well. EDIT: I didnt mention the weight as I didnt want to sound like a cracked record but that as well - if it had a turbo, or was 250KG lighter it you wouldnt be able to move for them on track Edited July 23, 2014 by docwra
GMballistic
How about a Honda Integra DC5 Type R? Reliable engines, tune-able with lot's of options available. Prices from £5K to £9K+ used. For example: http://www.quickmeme.com/img/dc/dc891766204888db579e376a40ee9547df0c32bac4d432b010ad936a62dec32e.jpg

I do agree the costs are pretty high to run the

Suits
Probably be better off with a DC2 and swapping the engine over. Agreed, as a for a track car they will be better alternative than the better to live with daily DC5. That said, they're probably going the same way too. UKDM ones will be the best bet for that. I'd just get a £1500 EP3 though probably with a diff.
