Vlad Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Got short shifter fitted and it tiny little bit miss-aligned...all heard ok, reverse goes in tight... Was driving earlier and went to put in reverse... And this happened Actual gear stick is snapped...was a right mission to drive it home lol Happened to anyone before? The actual stick itself was pretty warm...so I think it heated up and gone softer and that's why it snapped with a bit of force (minimal force) Is it normal for them to get warm? Obv whole tunnel gets pretty warm and heat travels...but never noticed it before as never driven around changing gear using bottom of the stick lol Looks like OEM gear stick thing goes back in tomorrow Just need to drill out snappd bit from the gear knob lol Quote
marzman Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Maybe because that knob is frickin enormous, the extra length acted as a lever and increased the pressure at the pivot point causing it to snap? 2 Quote
DoogyRev Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I had a small nismo one and it would get warm . . . I'm with Chris . . . a long knob will put way more pressure on the shaft. 1 Quote
GMballistic Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Maybe because that knob is frickin enormous, the extra length acted as a lever and increased the pressure at the pivot point causing it to snap? That would be my guess too. What short shifter was it Vlad? Wasn't some eBay "china made" special or something was it?! Quote
AMT Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I would have stuck to the original... hate these....'Ann Summer' gear sticks people put on Quote
GT4 Zed Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Had my B&M shifter snap in exactly the same circumstances. I had the Tegiwa extension on it. I agree it's the lever arm that's fatigued the metal at the weak spot which if the transition between the geartsick and knob extension. I plan to weld a thick sleeve around it as I miss my short shifter. Quote
Vlad Posted July 18, 2014 Author Posted July 18, 2014 Thanks all... Yea, it was b&m short shifter as well! Well, looks like I need a smaller knob then 2 Quote
WhackyWill Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Agree with all above, It was the length of your shaft that did the damage, not the size of your knob. 2 Quote
Daveyboy11 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 See the issues you face when you have a long shaft... 1 Quote
Vlad Posted July 18, 2014 Author Posted July 18, 2014 I know it now lol but what can I do...I can't just cut it in half... Quote

KyleR Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Why fit a short shifter then add a 12" gear knob to it? Quote
cmck13 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I think perhaps you got the answers you expected. Quote
spursmaddave Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Haha yea http://www.yourdictionary.com/fulcrum Quote
spursmaddave Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Sorry, I've snapped my fulcrum Just trying to show that a short shift and a long shaft can cause problems Quote
