WhackyWill
Posted it earlier in the F1 Chat Thread.. The government is to change the law to give local authorities the power to stage motor races on public roads. Prime Minister David Cameron made the announcement on a visit to a new Williams F1 team engineering centre. The government has conducted a consultation on the issue. It is currently a criminal offence to promote or take part in a race or trial of speed between motor vehicles on a highway or, in Scotland, on a public road. The proposal is to give local authorities the powers to suspend speed limits and some traffic regulations, in certain conditions. Speaking at the Williams facility in Oxfordshire, Mr Cameron said the move would be "great" for motorsport and would mean "more races, more events and more money coming into our country". Tour inspiration The success of last week's Grand Depart of the Tour de France showed the public's appetite for road races of both the two-wheel and four-wheel variety, he suggested. It is thought that the change could result in as many as 20 races every year on public roads.

GMballistic
Dont know what the road surfaces are like down there but anything like up here best get some road works going! All the roads around Westminster are fine.. Typical. Roads around here are sorely lacking in decent repairs ~ when they are repaired for the most part it's just a quick patch up job which never lasts either. Stutopia
It's not legal now? Has no one told the Saxo owners clubs all over the UK? Edited July 11, 2014 by SuperStu
JetSet
They have closed road racing in The U.K right now (or until very recently at least) down in New Brighton on the Wirral. They close(d) the roads for the day and had races for motor bikes and cars...possibly set off at intervals TT style. Probably a local by-law or an historic loophole? Ebized
The RACMSA control rallying/racing on public roads and closing roads means authorised organising Clubs have to jump through all sorts of hoops to do that including Acts of Parliament in some cases. Anyone/group found organising/taking part in any rallying/road racing without RACMSA authority would be in breach of the Road Traffic Acts, Highway Code etc, hence why 'Clubs' like ours have to be very careful when drive-outs are arranged to ensure no competition/racing etc is involved, or perceived by the police or others.

cmck13
Never understood why its ok to shut roads as they do here in Lincoln for marathons, cycle races, any thing else but cars, I agree with whacky will, just pop down to my local McDonalds Saturday night on the Carlton centre in Lincoln for you free for all drifting and that well known fastest 0-60 in a distance of a 100 yards.
Ebized
Different rules on private ground but as an example 12 car road rallies do not allow for any breaches of public road speed limits and Highway Code but if they include private farm tracks as timed stages then that is down to the organizers, but who first have to obtain RACMSA approval and carry out all sorts of consultation with neighbouring landowners. More info here: https://www.msauk.or...asp?article=774 Many events held solely on private land are not run under RACMSA rules but, for instance, there are Town Planning controls over the number of such events held on private land each year.
