JEMAN
So the remap never happened due to them saying they didn't have the software.......even though they said they did on the phone and it would give about 20 BHP more ?........so on the rebound I bought some new plugs ( NGK Platinum just gotta fit them). Now the Z has been pinking for a while so maybe changing plugs and fuel might help ? I was told that going for higher RON could help. Ive been using BP super unleaded 97 RON, so considering shell 99 (if there's one local enough). Do you guys think this May help ? Or any other suggestions on what might cure the pinking ? On a more positive note, clicking axle fix and new plugs being fitted Sunday Any suggestions would be great Cheers
Tricky-Ricky
Does it just pink at low loads/RPM? or when its being driven hard (detonation)? Have you got any mods? it sounds like you just have some preignition due to low ROM fuel. Was the intended remap from an authorized Up-rev tuner? if not then i would walk away, Up-rev is the only retuning software available for the DE motor. JEMAN
Hi The pinking seems to be lower revs when I'm just gently pushing the accelerator. The Z has a stainless exhaust and fitted from the cats back and a cone air filter. These were fitted before I bought the car. It's a 2003 with full history and 48k. So an up rev sounds the way to go.....any ideas where and cost if I go down that road ?
ZMANALEX
I doubt very much if you have pinking or detonation if using 97 or 99, however if you do, then I would recommend that you do not drive the car until you get it looked at. The only reputable up rev tuners are RS or Abbey: Alex.

docwra
Im feeling Ive missed something here ......... but why do you think its detting? Det at low revs is almost unheard of and Id be amazed if it was, it would also mean the engine would likely tear itself apart at high revs. Try unplugging your air flow meter and see if you still have the same problem ........ and who are these people you speak of, take the car to Abbey or Horsham and get it done properly. BTW, youve got the wrong plugs and only very sensitively tuned turbo cars tend to notice the difference between BP and Shell fuel
cmck13
You can check the uprev prices from the 3 dealers, RS up at Leeds, Horsham and Abbey down the south (depending on where you are),seems high at first because there is an initial cost for the licence. Thereafter its should only be the cost of the hourly labour rate. I would agree of course with Alex you need to get the car to a garage and find out what your pinking is first?
JEMAN
It's a outlet for Viezu.....it was on there site for the Z. I don't really won't to say the company's name, as he did apologise but hadn't taken my number ( I didn't leave it either) to stop me coming over. I was just a bit gutted. Airflow meter. Is that the metal box at the top of the large intake pipe ? The cone air filter is at the other end. I bought the plugs that were allegedly recommended for the Z ? Tricky-Ricky
i would definitely walk well away from the tuners whoever they are, going by your replies i can see that its unlikely that you have pinking as such, although in my experience it can happen under the right circumstances, The air flow meter is the plastic box that has a plug going into it thats connected to the air filter either directly or by a short tube, depending on the filter type you have. What plugs have you got? IE the letters and numbers? platinum plugs are fine as long as you have correct fitment and heat range.
JEMAN
Hi bud, they are NGK. PLFR5A laser platinum. Guy in shop did look them up so fingers crossed they are ok. I'll look at unplugging the air flow meter and see what that does. It does only pink when the car has warmed up ? Cheers
docwra
Why do you think its pinking? The sound is quite unique, like a skeleton wanking into a biscuit tin is about the best description Ive heard , but Ive never known a car to do it apart from at high revs, you sure its not something else? It can only really happen because of wrong plugs ....... and youve got the right ones (my bad in earlier post) or a very lean fuel mixture which should be impossible on a standard car, even if the AFM is busted. V. strange ......... EDIT: BTW, Ive suggested unplugging the AFM as the car will go onto a "base map" if you do, this means it runs very rich so if it is det then it should stop it. You wont be able to rev over 4K but at least it gives you a better idea Edited July 5, 2014 by docwra
Tricky-Ricky
I am starting to wonder if its a loose exhaust heat shield that your hearing, and the fact that you say its only when the car has warmed up could also be a factor. Oh and yes NGK. PLFR5A laser platinum. plugs are the correct type. Edited July 5, 2014 by Tricky-Ricky
CJRamze
I think Ricky might be right, I think its more than likely something loose, probably exhaust wise. I found out my odd low rev sound was one of the exhaust hangers. My garage fixed it for me and didn't charge me
JEMAN
Thanks guys.......now I'm going to look into the exhaust for sure.......could be that. It's a crackle I hear once the car has warmed up so it could well be something like that. I'll check underneath That's what I love about being on here, all the info is priceless and really helps to rule things out Thanks guys......I'll keep you posted Cheers
