mugwump
I use AVG and its free, http://free.grisoft.com/ I use that too (as well as spybot) but then I am paranoid! (and zone alarm, and trojan hunter, and ad-aware, and netcraft toolbar and security task manager and ethereal and ..... Its amazing my PC has any capacity left to do any work!) Chris`I
ethereal might be getting a bit too hardcore for most folks on here, but I would definately suggest a spyware program such as ad-aware and a firewall (mine is a hardware firewall + windows, not the best, but I know what I'm doing most of the time)

mugwump
how often do you run the spybot................. do you also have to do it in safe mode.? You can configure spybot to load on startup, download its latest update and do a daily scan all without intervention from the user. So just install it, configure it and forget it. Leave it to do its thing every day. It doesnt need to run in safe mode, no.
