Peak 370
''Sleepers'' are a big thing in the American car scene. Cars that look slow / go fast, essentially. It is easer to do out there, but anyone had a car like that here, to any extent? For me the best were, here; Megane 175 Cup. A 2.0 diesel with 205 bhp after a map, 310 lbs-ft and simply great handling and brakes. Used to stay with Civic Type R, etc. 50+ mpg. There; Dodge Dart. A 30 year old ugly car but with 500+ bhp from an OHV 7.5 litre stone age V8 with Holley Carbs the size of footballs and no external clues, even the skinny wheels were standard. Lexx
VXR8. No one really had a clue what it was. The "VVectra with a bodykit" comments made me laugh. 440bhp soon shut folk up.
Peak 370
Lexx, good shout. My Monaro had 400 bhp ( a place in Brackley, Northants gave it some more), similar thing to the VXR8. When you think the SC version has 580 bhp, too. 640 bhp with minor mods! PS The Dodge did 8, yes, EIGHT mpg.
Lexx
I'm actually on the hunt for a Monaro at the moment. I'd prefer another VXR8 but can't stretch that far.
14N
Not really sleepers, more 'snoozers'; I've had a Clio Ph1 172, a Mondeo ST220 and currently have a Clio 182 Cup. To the untrained eye, they just look like a 3 door shopping car and a family hatch, but all respectively pack a punch
coldel
Anything Daz owned...looks like a standard Zed, but its not a standard zed - in fact they often were covered in crap to make them look even slower
Rock_Steady
I had a corolla with a caldina 3S-GTE rev 5 engine. About 270 hp. Looked totally stock but went like stink. Also had an almera with a pulsar SR20DET engine. Again looked stock but was pretty quick. The corolla had type R, BMW and sometimes Porsche drivers scratching their heads
BulletMagnet
My bro once ran a 1974 Mk.I Celica with ST badges and patchy bodywork, however in the engine bay he ran a 2.0L GT engine with Twin 45 Dellorto Carbs and fast road & rally cams, tighter valvesprings and ran a meth mixture fuel. Used to surprise the Escort boys down in Southend back in the day

Peak 370
One of mine was a 335D, mapped to 340 bhp and with a 318D badge on the back. Focus RS and Audi S3 pilots really couldn't work it out on one run i had.
djtimo
My lexus IS-F, most think it's a 2L until they are left in the dust!
addisj
I had an import mk2 MR2 turbo a while back. It looked just like the N/A UK spec cars when I first got it. I added a bigger intercooler and an Apexi boost controller which resulted in around 280bhp and they were relatively light too. 0-60 running standard boost was 5.4 sec's. That thing was a little rocket. Bl00dy dangerous when the back went out though The inside of my Zed smells exactly how the 2 did. Took me back... CJRamze
Always suprised people in my Leon Cupra R. Looked like a family 5 door and... Was but I would say that it was easily as fast as the zed in a straight line Then there was the time I tried to overtake a clapped out old saab. It had nasty horrible Fox alloy wheels was the squares looking car ever. Look liked it was ready for the scrap we both gave it full tilt from the lights and he disappeared. I'm going to guess it had 350+hp
The Bounty Bar Kid
Golf mk iv r32. No chrome bits just standard looking . Understated and suttle but with a 3.2 v6.
SwissZ
My Infiniti fx50 is great fun on the Autobahn. Taken it to just over 270 kph on the clock and it gets there pretty quick. That's surprised most things that have tried to flash me out of the way
GMballistic
Golf mk iv r32. No chrome bits just standard looking . Understated and suttle but with a 3.2 v6. Love the R32's ~ some of those engines are just music to my ears. Knew a guy on CTRO called eatthis that had a particularly good one (older Mk). Last time I looked though it was hydrolocked so not sure if he got it sorted. Here's a video of his; Edited July 1, 2014 by GMballistic
JetSet
Going back a long time ago a mate of mine had one of the last VW Beetle's sold in The U.K (1973-74?) and into this he fitted a Porsche 914 engine from a wreck he bought. O.K, it was only 110 or so BHP but it was sure fast for the time. Pete
gangzoom
My 335i is not bad as a sleeper, pretty much identical to a 320d from the outside but 400bhp available at a touch of a button But recently came across a 15 year old, rusting Fiat Uno, not sure what it was running under the bonnet but kept up with me even when I was at WOT all the way through 2-3 gear!!!
Peak 370
I didn't drive it but there was an Audi TT in Colorado with 350 bhp both ends of the car! 700 bhp and 4WD hairdresser's car!! Used to scare and then beat Porsche turbos.
Ballardpaul
I had a Peugeot 306 gti6 so not particularly fast as standard, but mine had 443bhp. Looked pretty standard apart from the massive ap racing calipers up front. All going through the front wheels 😳
Grundy
This will always be my favourite Twin Turbo R32!
