JetSet
It would surely be more sensible to scale a punishment. Say 3pts for 30-50mg, 6pts for 50-80mg, and a ban above 80mg, criminal records with >100mg Not going to complain about that. Some years ago, when the Tories first came to power and claimed they would end the war against Motorists (yeah right) they did come up with what I thought was a good idea, 2 points for minor speeding and a graduated scale up to 6 points for more serious speeding while retaining the right to ban someone for excessive speed. JetSet
Zero tolerance doesn't work practically. So many ways you can ingest small amounts of alcohol and not even know. Not going to express an opinion on this one but several countries have a Zero tolerance policy. It obviously works in Saudi Arabia, Oman, etc but how it works in The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia, I've no idea. Other countries are far more progressive than The U.K and I'd like to see these policies put into place. Stricter limit on Alcohol levels for drivers who have passed their test in the last 2 years and a very strict limit on certain drivers, ie, bus, HGV and Taxi drivers. Jetpilot
Personally i think they need to focus on standard of driving far more than a few mph over the speed ltd (time and a place). I have not heard of anyone being booked for the new laws regarding tail gating and middle lane morons. I drove back from Portsmouth the other evening (still light), the m27 was quiet, the amount of people sat in either the middle lane, even the outside lane with nothing ahead for miles was just astounding! Start cracking down on bad driving and handing out points and fines for that if they want to make the roads a better and safer place to be, i have no idea why its just speeding that is seen as so antisocial and dangerous (again within reason).

I couldn't agree more. I saw a news report on 5000 drivers being stopped and warned about lane hogging and tailgating in the West Midlands. Why do they concentrate so much on speed. Answer it is easier to enforce. It would be better to use more police on our roads.
steve916
:: Level 3 - £1,000 to £4,000. Includes the sale of alcohol to a drunk person Ugh? Every pub in the country then
davedutch
Going back to the start, the proposed fines are maximums, apparently magistrates guidelines won't be changing and they base actual fines on ability to pay based upon individual incomes so the £10k would only be applied to someone earning £20k per month.Of course this does mean that an unemployed person caught speeding on the motorway would get off with a pittance, which seems hardly fair. Points will always be the best deterrant so I agree with an earlier post the points should be graduated according to severity of offense. I agree, it's these kinds of actions on the road that bring out the worst in people and push a moderate man or woman over the edge.
