Phone adapter: -£130 for a bit of plastic!

I got an 04 Z recently and went to the Stealers to ask about getting an adapter or new cradle so that I can use my Sony Ericcson W810i in car. Anyway, the young guy in the parts dept looked up his system and quote me £130 for a new cradle unfitted? I asked him to check this as my eyebrows must have been on the ceiling and he confirmed this and then siad the bluetooth one was 'only' £70, again unfitted.

My question is does anyone know of anywhere that will sell one of these at a reasonable price and also, does anyone have any comments about how good or not the Bluetooth one is compared to the wired option. Will it do everything the wired cradle will?

I'm not scared of spending cash but £130 + fitting for what is only a bit of plastic with a phone connector is a bit much.

Definitely go for the bluetooth one, as it is not limited to a single phone.

New price buying seperatley is ( was ?) approx £100, so if you can get it for £70 then bite his hand off. No "fitting" required, it just snaps into place. Programming it to understand your voice may be another story though ........... :p

Thanks, Looks like all I need to know is a) my phone does Bluetooth and B) how to make it work with voice commands.

Must be easy enough to tell it to answer a call I suppose.

The system in the car does the voice commands for you, it's not phone dependant. I'm also pretty certain that Sony does have Bluetooth. :)

I've re-read your original post and am worried about confusion......

Does your car have a cradle in the centre armrest? If it doesn't then go to a phone specialist and see what they suggest.

If it does, you dont need a new cradle. You need the Bluetooth adaptor (circa £100 but if your dealer will sell you one for £70 snap his arm off).

Fitting the BT adaptor is easy (if you remember to pull out the spring release on the cradle!).

Matching your phone to the BT is shown in the instruction leaflet with the cradle (and possibly in the handbook).

If you have steering wheel controls, then you answer calls by pressing the button thereon - this automatically mutes the readio/cd/etc.

Microphone is top of windscreen, and only right door speaker is used for calls.

Hope this helps!

I was using the Sony Ericsson K750i and it worked superb with the system. Much better than the samsung I'm using at the mo!

BTW> As already said, you want the BT adapter only (assuming your car has the weird looking plastic thing between the seats).

If you're dealer is charging you £130 for one of these, then we have traders on here that do them for £100 all in.

My phone has a cradle with a different connector so I guess I will go and buy the BT adapter. I'm not worried about making many calls in the car but I need to be able to answer incoming calls. Will give it a go and hopefully all will be well. Surprised my dealer (Arnold Clark in Glasgow) has a 'bargain' although he has not been to bad to date I think although he did hit me up for £140 for the P1 (3 year) service.

May not help, but my car does not have the fitted SatNav so I got myself a Tom Tom.

This allows me to use my phone handsfree via bluetooth and solves two problems at the same time (SatNav and phone all in one). You can also read/write text messages on the Tom Tom screen, not that I suggest you do it whilst driving.

Just an alternative solution for people to consider.
