aidan
So you get done for speeding / using phone / etc etc (delete where appropriate) - and get your three points and fine as you deserve. After three years the points are no longer counted on your licence. After four years you can have them removed from your licence. BUT Why then do insurance companies still stipulate 5 years!!!! Sorry for the rant, but it pi**es me off......as per title scamming buggers! Edited June 1, 2014 by aidan
ChrisS
It's been like that for 20 + years. Not saying it's right, but one is government one is a private company. If the private company want to hold it against you for 20 years they can if they want. It's their business choice not the politicians. Randy_Baton
Because if you did something likely to cause an accident in the past you're more likely to do it again in the future regardless of the time frame. We're lucky it drops off at all. It's statistical analysis, not law breaking. Law breaking is just the thing that brings it to their attention. Ekona
Easy answer is not to break the law. Or at least, don't get caught.
wizurd
They are there to make money. Not there for any higher reason that's for sure. Work with enough of them to know that.
PiGFoetus
And that's the truth of it. Providing us with a financial umbrella in the event of misfortune is the service we must buy. They need to make the most they can off us without us picking a competitor. If they can club together to reduce the number of common variables and concentrate on their own CVPs and USPs, then that makes their lives more straightforward. As with most business, we are cattle to be herded.

Well yes, that is kinda the whole point of businesses, I do believe.

Ekona
Really? Is that for business in general, or just for insurance? Should we have a government-run not for profit scheme, even accepting the extra admin costs that would incur? Yeah man, the state should run all the other big stuff too, power, utilities, public transport. They should be by the people for the people! ¡Viva la revolución socialista! flyboy
Just use an insurance company which asks for 3 years of history not 5! There are plenty about.
JetSet
When I switched my house and contents insurance to Lloyds TSB they wanted to know if I'd made a claim in the last 10 years ,which unfortunately I had. I'm surprised that motor insurance don't ask for a 10 year history as drink driving seems to effect your policy for many more than 5 years . I normally take the easy route...ie gocompare, but might look at ones that only go back 3 or 4 years.
