Phone upgrade

Hi guys, completely off topic but I was hoping for an opinion or recommendation.

I am due a phone upgrade, currently using an iPhone 4s 64gb. I have been using apple phones now since the 3GS and ideally would like to upgrade to another iphone, however the 5s is a bit old hat now and the anticipated 6 is a long way off.

Now I can either upgrade to the Samsung galaxy S5 and sell my immaculate 4s to recoup as much money as possible. Or opt for a sim only contract, dramatically reducing my bill. I am concerned that I will probably find it hard to get on with the S5 and it will be a PITA converting all aps and music over etc.

What do we think? Has anybody swapped from apple to Samsung? What do we think of the S5 (those that have them?)

Thanks

The 6 is 5 months away. If you really want one, that's not a long time to wait at all given you've had a 4s for, what, a couple of years?

S5 is a good phone by all accounts, if you can live with Android.

I just went from a 4 to a 5s, pretty underwhelmed its faster and a lot of my annoyances with the 4 have been fixed but its not blown my socks off.

Went android for the first time earlier in the year on the nexus 7. For the first week i felt like my parents for the first time in my life, couldn't do anything!!!

5 months doesn't seem that bad at all, considering I have had the 4s for 2 years, good to know  Although 5 moths could easily turn into 10.

I haven't had any experience with android and that concerns me as I know apple software like the back of my hand.

Haha precisely! Most contracts are two years now and that is a long time to be with something you're not that happy with. Maybe I should be patient.

If it helps, I've I moved from a 4 to a 4s as soon as the 4s was released, and my contract ended 2 months ago, gone to a sim only deal now (£16 a month WOOO! )

5s was just to meh for my liking, hated the materials used to make it.

Just wait and see what the 6 has in store for us.

To help put things into context and i think i reflect the opinions of others too.... I currently have an iphone 5 and i will never have another iphone. There a loads of better devices out there now which allow you to access a lot more free content and don't restrict every purchase you wish to make (in the way of phone add-ons) to apple!

As already mentioned, Sony's Xperia range are pretty top flight devices! DO NOT touch Samsung with a barge pole... I will never buy another Samsung product. Having owned several phones, tv's blueray players etc, i have to say, the reliability and quality is quite simply crap. Never again...

Haha oh god! I need to hang fire and do a bit of research. Sim only for a while me thinks! Cheers guys!

That's what I am thinking Grundy. Sim only is pretty short and so cheap in comparison so I may aswell opt for that and wait.

Always a good idea to set an alarm for the date you phone contract runs out so you can go down to sim only. I was on sim only and got the 5s for £450 when taking in the extra I'm paying on my new contract. I'm happy with the 5s, just not blown away. It just feels like memory upgrade.

Should point out I've got no problem with working android now, it only take a few weeks to get used to.

I'm also waiting for the new iPhone to launch because I don't want to move from Apple. I've tried the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and hated it so it's now sitting in a drawer. Same with the Windows phone. That was even worse. Apple products just suit me and I like the styling and everything else about their products. Out here I'm missing my mac but it was a relief to leave my PC behind!

If you go sim only, month to month, for a while you're in a great position to either wait for the 6 (it'll be September at the latest I'd wager) or if something super exciting from another manufacturer comes along, you can dive right in.

I've not changed from iOS to android but I do have a nexus 7 on the side (don't tell my ipad) and the android OS took a little getting used to, but it's not a huge leap to make if one of them takes your fancy, couple of weeks use and you'll be all over it. Not used any of the android OSs from Samsung or HTC or Sony, I imagine they're similar but with the added feature of having to wait longer for updates whilst they splash their own flavour over them and try to point you at their own content stores.
