rtbiscuit
When I was at school everyone used the term halfkast when referring to someone of mixed race. Even the mixed race kids used it with us when we asked what to call them. But now you wouldn't dare use it. I never saw it as derogatory but that was 20 years ago. I am right in thinking its not a good term to use?

rtbiscuit
my ex who I dated for nearly 4 years was from Jamaica. Race was discussed many times. She and her family were very matter of fact. They were black. They didn't say afro Caribbean or coloured. They said, black is a colour. The PC crowd had made me far more nervous about offending than I ever should be. There has only been one time I think I've ever had a comment where I thought the person was racist. When I was asked if I felt dirty after sleeping with my black girlfriend. To me that is racist behaviour. Edited May 2, 2014 by rtbiscuit

HollowPoint
For what it's worth: 1) I'm the youngest of 7 siblings, the eldest three are 'mixed race', British, Indians. 2) My best friend in Junior school was called Khalid and was from Sri Lanka 3) My favourite TV show growing up was a little show on Channel 4 called Desmonds 4) My eldest sister married an Egyptian Muslim and had two 'mixed race' kids who are British, Indian and Egyptians 5) I work with a Muslim guy called Akeem from Nigeria and an Hindu guy called Kamal from India 6) My step daughter is a Lesbian 7) I used the rhyme at school with the N word in it, without realising it's meaning 8) I felt 'odd' the other day when someone I know is NOT a racist, used the phrase "Nigger in the woodpile" on the phone to me 9) I do NOT feel that Clarkson was in any way being racist and because I used that same rhyme at school, could easily have made the same Gaff. 10) I'm white, blonde haired, blue eyed, straight and voting UKIP I am NOT A F%#!ING RACIST, nor a bigot and I am SICK and TIRED of the morons in this country, who insist on making mountains out of molehills and issues out of nothing! The Gay Marriage thing was another one, I couldn't give a flying f%#! if gay people can get married or not, I really don't care. Were I an MP, or had there been a referendum, I'd have abstained from a vote, for the simple reason I care not about the outcome, that's their issue and it's up to them to push it, only they didn't did they? The people who did, are the wet lefty liberal STRAIGHT people! I asked a gay friend of mine who owns a 300zx the other day, if he and his civil partner were going to get married now that they can, you know what he said? "No of course not, marriage is between a man and a woman!". I laughed and corrected him, then realised WTF I was doing! That is HOW f%#!ed up this world is now, me, a straight guy, started telling my gay friend that his opinion of marriage was wrong, because he thought it didn't apply to him! Someone summed it all up earlier in this thread "If the Mirror had never shown the footage, surely no one would have been offended?". He's absolutely ****ing BANG ON! Clarkson isn't the one to blame here, if anyone is offended, blame the Mirror! If you believe TG is scripted, then the script writer is to blame for the original footage and it explains why Clarkson tried to mumble the word, then decided it was just too close to the bone to be aired. If you believe it's spontaneous, Clarkson gaffed because he's an old git, who used the N word in the rhyme at school, then made sure it wasn't aired and realised his mistake. Either way, this is a NON ISSUE and it's @*!# like this, that stirs up the bloody BNP and the EDL and the National Front etc. Pack it the **** in!

HollowPoint
LOL yes I can see how that would appear ironic. But, I'm not saying everything is ok, I'm simply saying that there are plenty of issues of genuine racism that need to be dealt with, like my ex-neighbour, who continually told me that his DOG was a racist, because it barked at the Nigerian family that lived behind us and no one else. I continually tried to tell him, that his dog barked at EVERYONE who walked past, but he was having none of it. Now the simple fact is, he's what I refer to as a 'harmless old racist', because he's not acting on his thoughts and his thoughts are not of hate, not even of dislike, just burned into him from a very young age and he's learned to kerb these thoughts ever coming out of his mouth, except when he's talking to a white guy, with blonde hair, blue eyes and a white family, where he suspects his comments won't be frowned upon. He's never going to cause offence to the Nigerian family, I brought the issue up with them when we moved out and they assured me, he'd never been anything but polite to them, would happily hold a conversation with them and has even in the past helped them when they were in need (Leant them a mower I believe). She (The wife/mother of the family) is actually the one who put the phrase 'harmless old racist' in my head. As she said, he's a 'harmless old racist', he has racist thoughts, in the sense that he probably believes they are 'different' or possibly even in some way 'inferior' to him, but he's not doing anyone any harm and you CANNOT police peoples thoughts. You can tell them how to act, you can tell them to apologise for saying something they later realise is perhaps racist or may have caused offence, you can tell them to make sure what they said on camera never hits the airwaves, but you CANNOT, stop them thinking what they want to think and you cannot criminalise people who say things that were never intended to go public. Just to clarify that last point, some of UKIPs candidates have recently AGAIN been dragged into the news for racist views. The one I'm going to pick on is the South African guy, who described Muslims as animals, Nigerians as generally horrible people etc. Should he be removed from the candidate list for UKIP? Yes. Should he be removed from the ballot paper entirely, even as an independent? Yes, I think he should, we don't need or want someone with those views in any position of power, be it nationally, or locally. Should he be arrested though? No, he's South African, where those views are common place amongst whites and blacks have similar views about the whites. He's from a different place, where the views and opinions he's expressed, are pretty regular and almost to be expected. He's been drawn over the coals, if he didn't realise before that you just can't say stuff like that here in the UK, he certainly does now, leave it at that. chubbster
Please allow me to comment on your arguments... 1. Paragraph one, whilst amusing, is irrelevant. Your ex neighbour's dog who barked at everyone, has nothing to do with this issue. Jeremy Clarkson is not a dog - that is an insult to dogs. Yes, it is true that Clarkson makes sickeningly disgusting remarks about many types of people, but calling him a dog does not excuse him. He is a human being who should know better. He cannot be innocent like a dog, because he's not a dog, he's human, sadly. 2. Paragraph two - He's not a 'harmless old racist'. I am seven years older than Jeremy Clarkson. You CANNOT excuse him because of his age. That is just ageist (and I'm not joking here). 3. Paragraph three - "he's not doing anyone any harm". He IS doing us harm (it's the main part of his self-devised job-spec to do us harm - he makes his living out of it). He's doing us harm by encouraging people with bigoted views, by expressing them himself. He is responsible for increasing the divisions between us. 4. Paragraph four - Ignorance of the law is no excuse, even if you are from another country. Would you excuse a man who said, "Well, in my country it's legal to have sex with a girl of 12?", just because he's from another country, or "in my country female genital mutilation is acceptable", or "in my community we torture and kill people we disagree with", just because he's from elsewhere? You've still got a nice car, by the way.
HollowPoint
Lol thank you for the car compliments. I really think you misunderstood my comments though. I'm not saying that if he'd televised this it wouldn't be terrible, it would. But he didn't. He actively went out of his way to make sure it wasn't, because he realised at the time, despite his love of courting close to the bone, this was TOO close to it. If I was in the middle of something else and starting to sing the same rhyme, which as I've stated already, I used in junior school with the N word in it, then realised I really shouldn't do that and mumbled the N word, then had the editor make sure it was not aired, am I guilty of deliberately inciting racism? NO. I think perhaps your distaste for Clarkson may be clouding your judgement here. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
chubbster
I think perhaps your distaste for Clarkson may be clouding your judgement here. Any person with his public image who sings a racist rhyme out loud when he knows he's on camera, shooting a piece for a national TV show, should be arrested and charged. It's the people who like him whose judgement is clouded, not mine. I freely admit that I dislike him intensely, but my judgement is crystal clear. To give different examples - what if the Pope sang this rhyme to camera? What if David Cameron sang it to camera? What if Ed Miliband sang it to camera? Would it be brushed under the carpet? Of course not - They would GO. This is the kind of attitude that allowed Jimmy Savile to get away with it.
HollowPoint
LMAO I'm really sorry, but you're hatred for Clarkson is clearly getting in the way. Look, I know full well that I'd sing that rhyme off the cuff, just purely because it's something from my childhood, I know because I've done it. I never meant anything racist by it as a child and I certainly don't now! I would use it to pick between two things, just like Ip Dip Dog @*!#.... I do the same thing with hymns I sang when I was a child and limericks I used to hear. I'm seriously not being funny now, he's done nothing wrong. He began reciting a simple rhyme we've all heard, yes whilst on camera, but not on a live set, in a recorded segment he has full editorial control over if he wants it! You've admitted the man is a buffoon, should all buffoons get a criminal record for buffoonery? Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

Make it 4 weeks, to let the outcry gain a head of steam and you're on. Edit - should we both have a veto over the other's charity, just in case you don't want me to tell you to give it to something totally radical and vice versa? I'm sorry, but I think your dislike (and it appears to be borderline hatred) for Clarkson, most certainly is clouding your judgement. To answer the question about a politician, I give you Dianne Abbot, who remains an MP after tweeting "White people love to play divide & rule, we should not play their game." Now, let's consider for a minute what the reaction would be if a UKIP or Tory made that exact same tweet, but replaced the word "white", for " black". You are right, they most certainly would go. IMHO its this sort of double standards and viewing racism as a one way street that continues to fuel racism itself. From the Black Police Officers Association to the Music Of Black Origin awards, there are plenty of examples of organisations and groups in existence today that discriminate based on race. How these are any different to the signs that used to be outside pub doors saying "Whites only" which we now consider to be evidence of abhorrent racial inequality from a bygone era I don't know, but this new "positive discrimination" appears perfectly acceptable as long as its in the name of a minority group. Its still segregating, including and excluding people on the basis of colour or race. Thats racism.

Not "Is it a sexist term?", because I think we can probably all agree it is, but does my using it make me sexist? Of course (and you already know this, but we can role play ) that both context and tone are much more critical factors in the intent of the language a person uses, than the vocabulary itself. Which is why it's so tricky to have this type of discussion online, where as with a pint, face to face, I'm pretty sure we'd all be on the same page. Worked Example You come home from work and announce, "The breadwinner hast returned to the homestead. Fetch me a flagon of the frosty brew at once buxom wench, with a tray of your finest savoury treats and skimp not on the cleavage bearing". You could end up with either a cold one and some twiglets and a wry grin (on a good day) or a string of expletives and a wet head with a twiglet up your nose (on a bad one). Both would be totally reasonable responses Now in a meeting at work with an external 3rd party, if you were to say, "Be quiet dear wench, for the menfolk doth discusseth the number of guineas this here IT contract be worth, busy yourself with the tea making and biscuit wrangling". You'd be getting a P45 every time!
