If you got one handy, do it. Their after-sales support, in my experience, is second to none. They contacted me not long ago about an option to have my graphics card replaced, as some had reported as failing. It's been out of warranty for well over a year.

I just posted this in another thread about malware, but just for completeness here it is:

Any Mac users getting concerned about malware, there is a group test in the Summer 2014 Macworld magazine, looking at 3 free and 3 paid offerings. I can't find a link, they obviously want to keep selling magazines so may not have put it on their site, but I recommend the mag for Mac users who want to pick up bits and pieces, so go and buy one

In order of goodness in their opinion if you want to cut directly to the chase (ratings out of 5):

PAID

Intego Mac Internet Security X8 - £40 per year - 5 stars (built specifically for Mac, not a Windowz port)

ESET Cyber Security - £30 per year - 4 stars

Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac - £40 per year - 2 stars

FREE

Avira Free Antivirus for Mac - 4 stars

ClamXav 2 - 3 stars

Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac - 3 stars

I can't go into the depth of how much resource the hog and % detection of known malware etc, but the conclusion to the piece starts of with this,

"Do you need to run a full-time virus scanner on your Mac? The answer for most people todays is still probably no, although there are organisations for whom the added level of security is worthwhile..."

FWIW, I keep ClamXav for on demand scans of email attachments, internet downloads and a regular full scan. I picked this as it is super lightweight (only 20MB compared to between 150MB and 1.5GB on the 5 others mentioned above) and scores reasonably well on detection and is FREE! If I was gonna pay, based on this group test it'd be Intego - but I must stress I've not used it.

Never in the last 13/14 years of buying PC's and Mac's have I ever bought an anti virus software or used a free one.

Never in the last 13/14 years of using and owning computers have I ever had a virus that has done anything of harm to my computer or me.

Not saying they don't exist or that people are fools for buying them - just saying.

I've used Grokster, Limewire, BitTorrent, LOADS of porn, games, the lot. Everything any 17 year old would do with a PC, right up until today.

Just be careful what you download and use common sense I think.

It's a long shot but you've not toggled on zoom have you? cmd+option+8 to toggle.

Can you change it back in System Preference --> Displays.

Failing that, have a read for a free graphics card (on qualifying machines) but it doesn't fit your issue description - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167

If anyone is using Mail on OSX and has noticed the minor irritation (usually when someone replies to one of your emails) that your original sent mail font in the email chain has actually changed to Times New Roman, try installing this:

http://universalmailer.github.io/UniversalMailer/

It's a little add on for Mail which "fixes" the issue. My mail displays in my chosen font, size and style in the compose window (HP Simplified size 12pt for me), but Mail actually sends it out as Times New Roman (the worst font after comic sans). Once it's insalled, when you send mail it persists the font you selected to compose the mail. The bonus being the recipient won't think you've sent it from 1995 or that you are over 70 years old

You can also force it to make attachments not "in line". So when you drop an image into an email, it is attached properly and not disaplyed massive in the middle of the email body!

+1 never ever used an anti-virus on any computer PC/Mac/Linux and never had anything major go wrong. I do however re-install my O/S every few months on my PC ;)

Just picked up a used iMac (2007!) for Rebecca, its running on snow leopard, anyone tried sticking mavericks on a machine that old?

its been reformatted and has 4gb of memory...

The mid-2007 seems to be the earliest model supported, so if you have that one, it should run. Sorry I can't tell you if it will run at a sensible speed though.

Is it stable enough so far? I'm running it on a VM, wasn't ready to fully commit  Got iOS 8 on beta on my phone, really want to try out the handoff stuff.

Seems to be fine so far, everything I use on Mavericks seems to work. I have it on a Mac Mini (16gb RAM) it does say you need a certain spec to run it.

These are the "known" issues that apple point you to before installing . . .

afari

  • Safari may hang when playing certain Netflix content.

iPhoto and Aperture

  • iPhoto 9.5.1 and Aperture 3.5.1 are required on OS X Yosemite. Update to these versions from the Mac App Store.
  • When entering edit mode in iPhoto, a black screen may be displayed instead of the selected photo.
  • Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing may not function properly when both iPhoto and Aperture are installed.

iCloud

  • The shared purchase history page on the Mac App Store is disabled for Family Sharing accounts.
  • iCloud Drive may appear empty in the Finder after first time setup. Restart to resolve this problem.

AirDrop

  • AirDrop may not show nearby Macs.
  • Sending files to another Mac using AirDrop may not work.

I'm a happy bunny. While in Canada picked up a new 15" retina macbook pro with 16gb ram and 512 ssd, it's soooo quick. Worried I'm going to be disappointed with the display on my imac in the office when I get home though :surrender:

I'm going USA in Sept. Never thought about picking up a pro over there. Hmmmm...

Same spec as mine by the looks of it. What price did you manage to get it for?

I never updated yet as I was worried about all the know bugs and issues. Also that iCloud doesn't update on devices without iOS8

Is it worth downloading the beta?
