i want a zed so bad.,...(please advise)

Btw is flywheel replacement a common thing?

Yes, chances are that the dual-mass flywheel will be on the way out. If not then sods law says it will give up not long after you change the clutch. Get a solid flywheel as its cheaper and it makes the car more responsive. Downside is a little 'chatter' at low revs but its only a noise and not a problem. Rev pickup is much better.

.

Your budget is ok but then 'wasting' it by going for the lowest mileage defeats the point. Don't be afraid of high miles, you won't be spending any more to fix any niggles and you have more for all the fun bits you will want to get.

thank you

so assuming im buying one with no clutch change and no flywheel change and it fails after 6 months, what cost am i looking at to get these done? (ive seen the thread with pricing from like 2003 but just want to know what budget i need to have prepared)

You're looking at around £800 - £900 for the clutch, flywheel and labour if memory serves me right. That will vary depending on where you take it to get the work done (Nissan stealer or local specialist). Standard advice is as follows - If you need to change the clutch, get the flywheel changed at the same time.

If your buying budget is tight and you're looking at 100k plus Zeds in terms of mileage, which shouldn't be an issue. You do need to be aware of potential expense on things like the clutch / flywheel. That being said, I bought my 2003 JDM on 66,000 miles and she'd just racked up 114,000 still on the same clutch. I am exceptionally smooth though......in terms of clutch and gearbox use that is

Agree 100%. Mine had no evidence of a clutch change so I expected to need to do it but touch wood I've done 1000 miles since I bought it and the clutch is fine.

I think traffic light grand prix attempts don't help. I'm very careful with my clutch and gearbox whereas my father in law had to change the clutch on his S2000 at 60K.

I recently bought (9 days ago!) a 75k 2004 GT for £5800.

By some miracle, the clutch went two days before I picked it up, so the owner had to get that done as we'd already agreed a price. It was a big relief for me, but the flywheel didn't get done so I suppose I might have to do that at some point.

Otherwise, the car seems perfectly fine so far, other than:

1) Sub cuts in and out (common problem and I might have fixed it now).

2) Passenger front suspension makes knocking sound over speedbumps / uneven ground - previous owner pointed it out and suggested it's probably bushes (~£100?), but I have my suspicion that the arm will need doing (~£300?).

3) Rear tyres were bald, so two new boots set me back a fair bit (I didn't scrimp and it's nice to be able to put decent ones on there and know they'll be good in the wet and last me a while since I'm low annual mileage).

I will be devil's advocate on this.......the engine may be bulletproof (although we've seen a few threads with some going pop) however you've got to bear in mind that the other stuff gets worn out just like anything else.

A clutch is just under a grand.

The rubber is 500 for middle of the road

Brakes all round is gonna run about £300

Drop links, suspension arms, andthing with a rubber bush, shocks, brake lines, fans, radiators.

Not being the Angel of Doom but go into it with your eyes and wallet open.

I bought my 04 plate for £5,800 which I thought was a bargain as it only had 56,000 miles on it.

Two months in it needed tyres all round, £550.

Three months in I needed clutch + flywheel £900

Six months in I needed new brake pads and lines, £300

Oh and a full service for my piece of mind £300.

Yes, thats over 2 grand in 6 months..... :surrender:

hehe nice, ill probably be looking something that had these changed but we will see as im not afraid of high mileage anymore (thanks to you guys) i would assume these zeds will have it done at some point(hopefully) if not - well ill just have to spend some cash. - just wanted to be prepared

i used to drive a sexy rx7 few years back (had to go when first child came) and wasnt prepared for anything, ended up spending 4 times what the car was worth back then :) (not just repairs its including modifications) so i am not afraid of doing work to the car but will try to make sure it will be the east work possible :)
