stuarty
Most members will know that I've changed cars a lot over the last few years. At present I'm considering changing my Z4 3.0si coupe for either a newish Z4 35is, 370z or older Cayman s. I bumped into an old training partner today who is a Porsche independent specialist with over 20 years experience. We got talking about cars and he suggested a Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 2/4 S. I got thinking about it and started counting up how much cash I've lost in depreciation over the last 5 years and it's a lot of money! So I started looking at 911's and soon realised that a really nice 996 with lower than average miles, full Porsche/Indy service history in mint condition can be bought for under £15k. I really don't know much about 911's except they have an excellent reputation for being an awesome sports car and having high running costs. I really don't need a car but enjoy having one as i only work 1 mile from home two days a week. I would use it for driving pleasure rather than necessity. Does anyone know what particular models are worth looking out for and any specs. I quite like the GT3 factory fitted kits. Also what are realistic running costs per year to keep it in perfect order and does anyone know how much a £12-£15k car would depreciate over the next 3-5 years? Netnomad
Having owned a 996 Carerra 4 with GT3 aero kit to be honest I was a little underwhelmed with it which is why I traded it in for my Zed. Being 4 wheel drive it handled well enough on the road and track but did not give me the excitement of being on the edge (was expecting a lot more from it). Running costs are high 21 MPG if your lucky and they eat rear tyres that are not cheap. As to depreciation, if kept fully serviced they hold their value well. But be aware of the weaknesses of the water cooled 996 engines on the non turbo models (you will not sleep at night thinking it might happen to you) as they suffer from Intermediate shaft failure and bore score (check out the forums) If you want thrills buy a 911 turbo. I much prefer the Zed for driving fun. "]http://[/url] Edited April 24, 2014 by Netnomad

TBH, my 350z felt bullet proof and nothing ever went wrong with it apart from a error code regarding co sensor but it was in -7 degrees and after a reset it never returned. If the 370z is as reliable as the 350z it might be the best shout. I enjoy my z4 coupe but it's killing me with its ridiculously hard ride!! This information coupled with the fact I owned a 996 for almost 4 yrs leads me to conclude ... Move on it ain't for you

JetSet
how much a £12-£15k car would depreciate over the next 3-5 years? Not much I'd say, they hold their price remarkably well, much better than a 370Z, mint condition ones fetch crazy prices. Can't remember the exact figure my son in law paid for his 1994 911 about 5 years ago but I think it was very close to what I paid for my Zed brand new. Ricey
What I'd suggest is this. Contact someone selling the Porsche. Hand them 5k then tell them to drive the car to the nearest BMW garage and trade it in for whatever they want for the car minus 5k. Then drive away in a new BMW *insert model of car that you'll convince yourself you want and get rid of in 3 weeks here* It'll just save a lot of pissing around
