AliveBoy
I've got the xperia Z1, really impressed with it. I got it on launch day and although it's had a few software bugs it's now pretty good. Z2 comes out soon too
Grundy
MPSS! Ooops, wrong thread My Boss just got a Z10 through work (Won't give me one ) Says it's a good phone, but you are limited with apps. My contract ran out a month ago, keep forgetting to cancel it and get a cheaper bill for my 4s, iPhone not a possibility? Once Jailbroken, the possibilities are endless

:RedZed:
Mobiles are like tyres really. If you have an Android phone and it's not a Nexus device it's like having a Zed without MPSS tyres. All other Androids are sub par and will crash and fall apart.
Grundy
Phones just suck these days, it's not as exciting to upgrade any more, back 10-15 years ago was the best, when you have Flip phones, Colour Screens, Pollyphonic tones, slide phones etc, now it's all just brands I want another Samsung D500

Husky
My mate still has his matrix style phone, he uses it whenever his Iphone breaks I'm in the same sitation of figuring out which new phone to get after 2 years of the same thing. I have no idea so I think I'm going to have to sit down for a few hours and pour over the reviews! One thing I have learned is to go for a phone that is common as muck and has been out for a little while, this way you miss all the bugs with a brand new model and there are plenty of people with it so apps are much more compatible/bug free. Stutopia
If I wasn't team Jobs, I'd go Nexus 5. The new HTC one looks quite saucy but I don't know if it has proper android or some deviant HTC version.

The new HTC one looks quite saucy but I don't know if it has proper android or some deviant HTC version. Well it uses the Android OS, it's just 'skinned' with Sense (basically a theme that HTC develop in house). Personally I've never liked the various vendor skins although some people love them. I have an HTC One X now which I rooted and installed a custom ROM to do away with Sense. I'll get an N5 as soon as I can afford it.
Ekona
I don't like Android personally, but if you pushed me into one I'd be hard pressed to look any further than the Nexus. By all accounts from interweb friends who know their sh*t, it's the one to go for.
mouthwash
Why are you guys always recommending the most expensive phone? How do you know he even needs a Nexus 5? I mean, for all you know a run of the mill HTC Wildfire S could do him fine. Sick of the bandwagons in this place, hive mentality. If you think that having a Nexus 5 is going to help you make calls and not hang up half way through, think again. Serious note, I'm still using my HTC Desire and it's got a cracked screen... All I do is make calls and send texts, don't need a mini tablet in my pocket for that.

Grundy
See I'm probably just going to stick with my iPhone 4s - It does what I need it to do. Especially once jailbroken, the world is your oyster.

All I do is make calls and send texts, don't need a mini tablet in my pocket for that. It's far from the most expensive offering, starting at £299 unlocked I believe. Compared to a 16GB unlocked iPhone 5S at £549, which is likely to be replaced by an iPhone 6 offering in the next few months - so hardly a selling point. OP's stated he's upgrading, hasn't mentioned any budget restriction, has mentioned he doesn't want Samsung or Blackberry, had a poor previous experience with HTC and fancies a change from Sony. That leaves many options, including Apple, Nokia and the aforementioned Nexus 5 (which I believe is the only Google handset they offer currently?). So the N5 meets all those criteria posted as far as I can see, and is widely regarded to be a decent handset. Perhaps a cracked HTC Desire is what he's after, but I can't see how it more closely meets requirements from the first post than a Nexus 5 does... StevoD
SuperStu hes just being a troll after the tyre thread, which unlike that the the OP has given some reference on products not just asked whats best which is 100% based on personal opinion, anyway i like the nexus 5 alot looking into it but cant get it on a contract with vodafone and im not going to be buying one outright at 300 notes Edited April 4, 2014 by StevoD

Because I don't buy cheap sh*t, and therefore I wouldn't recommend any old crap to anyone. You're right of course, we perhaps should've asked usage, but pretty much everyone these days wants a smartphone that does everything as well as make calls and text.
