scodgie
Hi guys, I have just purchased my first zed, the seller advised me that the front compression arm needed changing, it is quite noisey and clattery, Ive no idea what it is, he assured me it was a cheap part and easy fix.. Im now questioning this? is it a specialist job, can say kwick fit do this sort of thing? just am flat broke after buying the car..any help would be much appreciated Cheers guys Ian
Ewen@Clark Motorsport
Hi Ian Compression arm failure is common on the 350Z, if its the bush thats gone then these can be replaced if its the ball joint then the complete arm is required. We can supply both and for the bushes either OEM Nissan ones which are not available from a UK dealer or aftermarket from Whiteline or Supepro. Its a straight forward job but I wouldn't trust Kwik Fit to change a tyre let alone a suspension arm you would be better finding a real mechanic, where about's are you based i'm sure someone can recommend a good garage? You would need to get the car in the air Kris, with the bush failing normally the rubber starts to detach from the metal outer. With the ball joint that can be a bit more difficult to check but slight play is enough to create a knock. We seem to sell more bushes than complete arms though. Im no mechanic, so I wouldnt know either way, is it worth doing the bushes first, or is it pointless if the arm is toast? cheers Ian

Thanks mate, I will try and borrow Neilp at the weekend to help. He is much more mechanically minded than me I hope its a bush but I have a funny feeling it is the arm. cs2000
Mine was knocking like mad and making some really horrible squeaking noises and it was the bushes on both sides, the arm was fine. I'd start with the bush, but remember you need a press to both fit and remove the old bush from the arm.
Paddy78
Ewen, probably a silly question, but why can't the ball joint be replaced? Is it the fact that the metal joint has deformed?
Keyser
Ewen, probably a silly question, but why can't the ball joint be replaced? Is it the fact that the metal joint has deformed? Its the design the ball joint is pressed in at manufacture and can not be removed without damaging the arm itself. The bush is a push fit but you will need a proper press 10 ton or bigger to "push" it in/out .

They were both totally shot.

They were both totally shot. Theyre not tested during an MOT. Most people find that the only way to check is to either take the arm off, or to raise the car up on a ramp and try to wobble the arm with a crowbar as a aid. I had the same issue with mine when I bought it. Got it for a very good price but it needed two new banana arm bushes (done), new AC radiator (done) new flywheel (not yet done), new boot struts (done), 4x new droplinks (done) and probably a few other bits, I've had it a year and just got the most expensive one to do. Thats a lot of work mate.. hopefully fingers crossed Im ok for now, what I have found though is IMO you dont have to go Specialists for the work on these motors, any competent mechanic can do most of the things youd do on your normal daily driver, like suspension, brakes etc.. and shopping around for parts can save you a bucket.
