wmr1980
Hi chaps, Trying to work out if it is a wheel bearing or the diff causing a whirring noise. It's not the gear box, or the drive shaft or engine. Definitely coming from the rear. Starts to hum around 40mph and becomes more pronounced as I go faster. Checked the diff and there are no metal deposits on the magnetic plug, oil has been changed recently and is in good condition. Is there an easy fool proof way of working out whether or not it is the diff or the wheel bearing that is causing that whirring?
Keyser
Wheel bearing sounds like a good bet - they usually get louder when you corner - so try cornering the idea is it loads the bearing thereby increasing pressure and the noise - doesn't always work, but worth a try
wmr1980
Seems like a good excuse to find a few winding roads. I'm pretty sure it is the bearing but I'll try that and pay attention to the noise when cornering. Thanks for the tip.

samsniss350z
Have you tried putting your hand next to the hub of the bearing you think might be worn/failing, it will be a lot warmer than the others if its on its way out.
