Whirring from the rear

Hi chaps,

Trying to work out if it is a wheel bearing or the diff causing a whirring noise.

It's not the gear box, or the drive shaft or engine.

Definitely coming from the rear. Starts to hum around 40mph and becomes more pronounced as I go faster.

Checked the diff and there are no metal deposits on the magnetic plug, oil has been changed recently and is in good condition.

Is there an easy fool proof way of working out whether or not it is the diff or the wheel bearing that is causing that whirring?

Wheel bearing sounds like a good bet - they usually get louder when you corner - so try cornering the idea is it loads the bearing thereby increasing pressure and the noise - doesn't always work, but worth a try :)
