The Chubby Ninja
That charger sounds like a really good idea. My car lies for a few weeks at a time and the batteries always dead with this cold and it's a pain. Would hopefully be enough to just to keep it charged

scobie140
I can confirm the solar charger failed and only deylayed the flat battery. However the car has never been started since November so that wouldn't have helped. Will need to stick charge battery on the to do list aswel now
The Chubby Ninja
That's a shame. I just bit the bullet and bought a new battery. Longest the car has lay is about 3 weeks since fitting without starting and starts sweet now glad I didn't waste money on the solar charger

Longest the car has lay is about 3 weeks since fitting without starting and starts sweet now glad I didn't waste money on the solar charger It would probably work fine somewhere sunny but Scotland in the dead of winter sunlight is a bit rare Very very slight progress, Battery is now fully charged ready to be re fitted. Made this up to stop the flex on the supercharger bracket at full beans. It only happened once and it caused the belt to jump a groove so has shredded one side of the belt. I couldn't justify the astronomical price of the official ones £270 odd for a few bits of flat bar and a couple of rose joints. Its not as easy on the eye but only cost me £9 to make and should function fine. Ordered 2x M8 rose joints from the web and the rest is just made up from scrap 1/4" plate and angle bar, 6x new spacers for under the strut bar and machined a bit of round bar to take the rose joints. I've test fitted the brackets and they fit fine but I forgot to measure how long the bar needed to be so just guesstimated, Easy enough to make a longer bar If need be.
scobie140
A bit more progress today. Test fitted the above bracket, fits well but I'm going to make the round bar a bit longer so it sits straighter when in position. Hooked up the battery which I charged up last time and it didn't have enough juice to start it. My charger has been temperamental so might need to invest in a new one. Battery is only a few years old so should be fine but it has been stone dead a few times so will need to get it tested and replace if required. Until then I'll just jump start it with my mini battery pack while i need to move the car about the drive. So off with the old belt, a few pics of some of the damage from jumping a groove. don't think I would have got much longer out of it Replaced with a new Gates belt Now to remove the charger jack shaft, only 4 cap screws should only take 5min...... nope Lack of clearance to remove the pulleys in situ meant removing the strut bar again then disconnecting the intake pipework. The bearings feel not bad but it was a tad noisy when running and they're not exactly expensive so will change them anyway. I'll press them out over the weekend and order up some new ones once I have the sizes
scobie140
Pressed the bearings out today. There was a fair bit of grease had escaped from the seals. The bearings have been changed at some point as they are now Skf. Looks like the correct spec, only thing that could be different is the internal clearances from OEM as its a C3 bearing that was fitted ( 6205 2RSH C3 GJN ). I see no reason to change from this so will replace with the same. The tensioner pulley bearings felt a bit tired as well so stripped them out, thankfully they were held in by a cir clip unlike the drive belt pulleys. These were clearly the original cheapo oem bearings as they had no markings on them. These will be upgraded to Skf as well 6003 2RSH GJN. I'll leave these at standard clearance for now and see how they get on Edited March 23, 2018 by scobie140
scobie140
New bearings arrived Shaft stripped and cleaned up New bearings fitted. All rebuilt and fitted. The bracket now transfers the noise of the supercharger straight into the chassis and into the cabin Looking for advice from other with a similar set up via the thread below. Left it running on the drive for 20min then drove it to work. Was good to have its first drive since November, never pushed it really just taking it easy and re acquainting myself with all the weird noises that the vortech brings with it. Felt a bit sluggish, could be cause its running on fumes that has been in the tank for 5 month, possible boost leak from having the pipework off recently. The belt was starting to slip a little I think on the way home so will tighten that at some point soon. I'm not overly worried just now and won't push it until Chris has had a play with her to see if she needs any adjustment since the last tune. Busy period at work for the next month but once my order from opie oils arrives I'll get her serviced then booked in with Chris at dyna tune to give her the once over & then get booked in to get the alignment sorted. scobie140
Knew something was up! Some strange noises coming from the front of the car and it feeling sluggish every now and then with the voltmeter readings jumping from 11V to 14V on the gauge constantly until it gave up and just sat at 11.5V with the battery light on. It sounded like the alternator pulley was sticking. My immediate thought is alternator. So stripped the alternator off. What a ball ache that is when the car is boosted, so much extra stuff to strip. And why make the holding bolt so long! Strangely it spins freely and feels fine this is at hands speed though so not quite replicating the 1000+ rpm I'll get it tested on Monday and hope its faulty and that’s the problem solved, if not I'll need to rebuild it and get an auto electrician to have a look at it. Not looking forward to the refit either way
scobie140
New alternator fitted & faulty wire replaced and she's running sweet again. Mot all good until it failed on emissions (CO2) 6 attempts on the emissions and still no joy. Tried ragging the car to get the sports cats red hot, tried redex and ragging still no joy. So until I can find a "friendly" tester its back off the road. If I had the foresight many years ago when getting the exhaust system made up I'd have went de-cat with a section made up after the Y piece to swap a cat in for Mot's. The Chubby Ninja
Think I have a set of oem cats in the garage if you want to swap them for the mot? If not, give me a pm and I might have some mot places for you. It's falkirk you stay eh?

scobie140
Finally we have an Mot! Changed the rear droplinks out while it was off the road since they were an advisory. Then the car went to stainless creations to get the old knackred sports cats cut out and new 400cel removable cats made up along with de cats. Once removed the old cats had signs of a good roasting and were badly damaged. New cats fitted for mot then straight up the road to swap them out to keep them good. Expensive Mot thanks to CO2 emissions!
scobie140
A wee clean Then off to pro grip to get the alignment sorted. Only drove in traffic since its been done so not felt the benefits yet but turn in feels better already. Happy now that there is no more outstanding jobs on the car to do other than the idler pulley but that is a 5 min job i've just not got round to yet. Time to save up the pennies to get stone chips & arch rust sorted now
scobie140
Idler pulley swapped out and new rear LED lights fitted A wee visit to knockhill, first meet for donkeys! so was nice to put faces to cars

scobie140
Taking advantage of the strangely mild weather were having just now to get my oil changes done for the start of the year A nice quick easy job I thought. Until..... Its hard to make out in the picture but the shoulder is coming away from the nut. And it wasn't brute force and over tightening it before people get their digs in It started to shear before it even got tight Normally this would't have been an issue since the cars off the road but I needed it moved that night so no time to get a new drain hose made up. This meant the ball ache of removing the whole supercharger to remove the hose and stick a plug in only to do it all again next year to stick the new drain hose back on So my nice quick wee job turned into a few hours of cursing and swearing as bit by bit I remembered just how much bits you need to strip just to remove the body of the charger. Any way done now and re fitted. Always a bit paranoid about the belt tension as I know it needs to be tight to stop slippage at high revs but don't want it too tight to put extra load on the bearings so had a bit of trial and error with that and seems to be fine now. 2min job as I've cut a hole out under the tensioner nut so I can easily stick a ratchet in. Ozzy225
Cant believe i missed this thread, Great Read and extremely helpful! Especially as i'm currently doing exactly the same myself
scobie140
Took the old battery out and charged it for 2 days. The charger said it ha completed the regen cycle and it was fully charged, when I fitted it the next day it was dead again All those winters of never trickle charging it caught up with it. So sized up and got the biggest battery I could fit in the bay. Fits like a glove! Just need to clean the air filter an its ready for this year
scobie140
Well I thought i'd be servicing it to take it off SORN but can't justify taxing it just to go back and forth to work when we've already got other cars and a bike to use. I did hope to sell the car so I could start a new project but unfortunately with the full pandemic carry on the niche market of buyers will have gotten alot smaller. So nothing else to do but enjoy her until she eventually sells. Gives me more time to decide on whats next I suppose. Passenger window motor seems a bit sluggish, I've got a new one lying in the garage so will tackle this when off work during the week. Must have noticed this previously and bought a new motor then forgot about it
scobie140
That time of year again, serviced her at the weekend & two new front tyre's for her mot today which she passed Decided to stick a new belt due to noticing a slight bit of damage to to a small section of one rib on the old one, a bit overkill but not expensive and keeps it in tiptop condition
scobie140
Finally remembered to change the passenger window motor, a nice day for it. Old one Just need to find time and more good weather to give her a good clean up for fresh pics and get her up for sale. Its been 10 years and is still great fun to drive but it's time for a new project I think, need to scratch that V8 itch.
