is £570 reasonable to have a touch screen head unit fitted all inclusive?

Hi,

Went to john kleis today as im looking to get a new head unit fitted into my 03 350z gt.

The price breakdown is :

£349 for the pioneer X2600BT head unit

£75 for parts, inc fascia, cables etc

£150 for estimated 3 hours labour

They say it takes 3 hours as it is obviously difficult to fit the unit, etc and then to get it looking flush and right it also requires an extra hour or so to make it all look good from the front.

Do those prices sound reasonable? Was hoping i could get it done for more like £400.

Mmm, well had £250-300 in mind for the head unit. Saw a nice sony one in another store for 250.

The main thing is the 150 in labour.... is it a difficult job for a electrical novice, and someone with little know how... and is it difficult to get it all looking neat and tidy after fitting?

Asked them about me sourcing stuff and them fitting but then they charge 75 per hour if you do that and it wouldnt be capped at 150 so if it took 4 hours would be 300 in labour

Personally I think it's a piece of cake, but then I did mine without any issues at all following the handy guides on here. I scratched the centre console a little lifting it in and out, and the mounts never fitted quite right, and the wiring was a mess, but it worked. If I'd come up against a major issue (like some have) then it would've been highly unlikely that I could've solved it with my fat thumbs.

All depends on how lucky you get, as well as how comfortable you feel doing it.

If they know what they are doing, it will not take 3 hours. Electrically wise, you don't have to be an electrician, just know how to plug on set of wires to another. It is a fiddly job, but not difficult. The only complication lies in lining the unit up. Bit of trail and error. I'm sure there is a guide on here that will show you what is involved.

I'm in the Berkshire/Surrey area, am happy to drive about there if there is anyone with good know how out there :)!

Seems like quite a split opinion on whether it is worth it or not! Could get a good head unit and parts for £300 all in if i fitted it myself, so the £150 labour does also come with an extra £125 in costs effectively!

Do agree that 3 hours seems like a long estimate for car audio specialists to fit a head unit!

£150 is a lot for fitting! I got mine fitted for €80(Including VAT) and that included him doing busters volume mod....

Who fitted your unit?

Would ideally just like to find someone who i can just pay reasonably to fit the parts i supply!

A car audio place. In Ireland though, so not much use to you.

Wow 3 Hours? and £150 just for fitting a head unit....? Apologies if it offends anyone and I can understand business etc, but I personally wouldn't spend that much on it. If you were wiring new speakers, sub etc, fair enough 3-4hours. But just a head unit....

As long as you have the Right adapter leads ( That go from the car leads into the adapter then into the headunit) the correct cage and correct fascia, there is no way it should take any more than an hour even if you are a novice.

It should be plug and play pal.

Totally agree. Seems a bit steep to me.

I got a full install done for £400 and that was including a headunit fitting and custom fabrication of wood etc. That was cheap but if you got the cash and £150 isn't alot go for it. But for me its silly expensive.

Where did you get this done?

I must be looking at the wrong places.... have been to 2 different audio specialists now and they seem to be wanting either high rates for fitting, or selling extremely expensive equipment and offering a reasonable install price!

Have a look at some online guides/youtube videos. It's really not as hard or scary as you may think when fitting a new head unit.

Once your old head unit is out, you will be left with some cables.

Those cables will then plug into your adapter. They will only go in one way/colour coded etc. If you're lucky it will just be one lead that goes into the adapter.

Then the adapter goes into the head unit

Then push the head unit into the cubby

Fit Fascia

Job done, then spend £150 else where ;)

John Kleis are pretty awesome...they do installs in brand new lambo's for the Reading Branch.

The Z head unit is pretty easy to fit TBH and I personally would just do it myself. Use Busters guide and you can get a decent sound!

Ostego, I got mine from Car audio security, give the guys a ring they were really helpful, got me all the bits i needed and I took it to a place in Northern Ireland (Audio Advice I know, no good to you) but they had it fitted in just over an hour and half (£70) and said the surround that came with it was the best they had ever seen as usually aftermarket head units in the 350 don't fit flush with the dash.
