HAMLNJ
I have put boiling water on a car once. When I was 17 and stupid. Very old Almera windows didn't crack but the seal and glue on the front windscreen went white!
Dblock
Use hot water from the tap, cold water will only freeze quicker again, then dry it with some kitchen roll. Use hot water from the tap, cold water will only freeze quicker again, then dry it with some kitchen roll. NO! That will 1. freezer faster and 2 it can cause thermal shock which can crack your windscreen.
Ekona
Hot water does not always freeze faster than cold. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, that's what has scientists baffled. Will's right, hot water from the tap at circa 45-50 deg is perfect for the job. Any warmer, like from a kettle, as you risk cracking glass. Any colder and you might as well just wave your willy at it.

drginger
Another little trick I do sometimes if I know it's going to be a heavy frost in the morning is to open the window by maybe 10mm so it's still pretty much sealed but doesn't need to drop down when the door opens. Door opens with no problem regardless of how thick the ice is!
flyboy
I have filled a kettle from the hot tap every frozen windscreen day for 30+ years and never cracked a windscreen yet. if you can put your hand in it then there is no problem IMO.

Totally agree. . My mate has a windscreen company and I don't think he sees any increase in business due to hot water..
