ro88ie
Bought my '06 zed in August from Evans Halshaw with 76k miles. So far had great service with them fixing every problem I could find such as headlight washers, air con, missing tow eye trim. They also skimmed the front discs due to vibration which came back so they replaced front discs and pads. However, on Friday I set off to take a 4 hour journey down South and 10-15 minutes after leaving as I accelerated down a slip road... bang! Engine let go and sounded like I was driving over stones as debris hit the underside of the car. Pulled over in a cloud of smoke, oil everywhere. Next morning got underneath and there is a hole in the engine block. The oil was checked and was mid way which is still visible on the dipstick. Only super unleaded has been used by myself. Evans had the car Mot and service before I bought it. (It also has FSH) Mileage now at 79k Unsurprisingly my 3 month warranty is out by a month so I await a call from Evans Halshaw with more information. Anyone had this happen before? Or have any advice on where I should go from here regarding dealing with the garage? 😠Thanks for any help, rob. http://s957.photobucket.com/user/Robbie_Bettson/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps3a323286.jpg.html?sort=3&o=
HARMLU
This is really bad luck. I hope you get it sorted. They seem to be a reputable company from what you have already said so I would just go in explain the situation without getting the daggers out. Seems there has been a trend of engines giving up recently
mattross1313
Holy @*!#!! Dude I feel for you Not sure what may have caused that (will wait for more tech people to come along). There have been a number of "my engine is dead" threads this week.....which is sad news.
370Ad
What engine does yours have mate? DE or Revup? I know you have said yours was topped with oil but the Revups do tend to be the more fragile engine.
ro88ie
Yeah it's the newer revup
ro88ie
Might I also add the car is completely standard to my knowledge
Dicky
I can never trust that bloody dip stick. Apart from its stupid shape I find it necessary to check lots of times before I'm confident I know where the true level is. It seems to pick up oil as you push it in which smears the surface and can look like where the level is. Cleaning it off and repeating usually gives me a different result. That's why I do it half a dozen times or so to be sure. Really sorry for your predicament. Isn't it bloody typical how these things happen just out of warranty! I would still push the dealer hard to contribute towards repair/replacement after such a short time of ownership. If they sold it to you with sufficient oil in it there's little chance it would have burnt off under normal usage in such a few weeks. StevoD
is this like the 3rd or 4th in a number of weeks now?
WhackyWill
Sorry ro88ie to hear this, could be the previous owners ran it on less than 98 octane fuel but that results in top end and piston problems been a few going bang recently...wonder what oil they used when servicing it.
R35LEE
We just had one in with oil starvation and it left a trail of metal down the road too Bad luck mate and I feel for you this close to the holidays too!
Jp606
OMG not another one! Feel sorry for you mate, I'd be devastated if that happened.
Dblock
Sorry to hear that mate :-(. Rev ups do burn oil and it's well known tsb so maybe use that with the dealer? Hope you get it sorted as easily as possible.
Wasso
Feeling your pain matey I had a MGTF do the same to me in the outside lane of the motorway. It's a horrible sound and feeling, then looking in your rear view mirror to see pistons and rods flying down the road and the horrible silence from your own car. Horrible and nasty. If I'm not careful mine will be next (touch wood for the short term). Mine is now 90k on a revup and consuming oil like no tomorrow. I've also noticed recently a missfire at around 5k, normally either in 5th or 6th, it's not every time, but 1 out of 20 blasts. Mine is particular to cylinder 6 which narrows things down, but I'm just waiting for my swap hopefully at the end of Jan. It could just be a coilpack or spark plug, but seems odd at a certain rev range.
HaydnH
My brother had this happen to a Fiat Supermirafiori, although I think the fact he hadn't put oil in it for so long the bonnet rusted shut may have had something to do with it. M13KYF
sorry to read this this is partly the trouble with buying a second hand car and always a tough one. Even with a FSH you just dont know how well its been looked after in between the services. I hope Evans do the right thing and sort it for you free or meet you half way
GMballistic
I would say from my own personal experience that the best the Op can hope for is that Evans Halshaw contribute a small amount to him getting a rebuild or second hand engine as a good will gesture. I bought a JDM Impreza WRX that went bang one month after I bought it ~ big end failure due to oil starvation after the oil pump failed. The seller although a registered car dealer had sold me the car from his home address with no warranty. After some advice from "citizens advice", letters back & forth to the seller, he eventually stumped up £500 towards the cost of my engine rebuild as a good will gesture. Little consolation really as the engine rebuild cost me £4500 but then I did upgrade a few parts along the way for peace mind (uprated pistons/con-rods/oil pump etc). Good luck and hope you do get a decent out come.
Neilp
If its on finance though, i'm pretty sure contacting the finance company will help. They have quite a lot of power in these situations.
ro88ie
The car was bought on finance so after I hear back from evans I will decide what to do next. I dropped the car with them this morning to investigate so hope to hear back soon.

GT4 Zed
Sorry to hear this terrible news mate! Hopefully you get supported by the dealer who seem genuine so far. Looking at all the cars having issues recently I'm not so sure it's just running low on oil that's the I culprit but probably oil pump failure as the cars are getting older. ro88ie
Out of warranty, out of luck it appears. Seems like my only option is to find a new motor myself. Had a call from Evans Halshaw saying the cost of a new engine would be £13k 😬
