nowhereboy
Is there any point in doing it this way? I would be planning on upgrading to a full system at some point but at the minute I can't afford it. The reason behind this would be purely for sound, not to bothered about gaining HP at the minute. MITZ@CougarStore
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the mid pipe change, better to put it aside for when you buy the full system... And all the aftermarket mid pipes are routed differently, so they wouldn't fit to the OEM rear silencer, so you'd need a custom mid made... brillomaster
you'll be lucky to gain any bhp with any exhaust... but speak to 14N, pretty sure he replaced just the mid pipe with a straight 3" pipe, didnt really make a lot of difference if i remember correctly. save your money and get a y pipe back exhaust
GMballistic
What CS said. The Cougar Store or Tarmac could sort you out with a great exhaust at a good price I'm sure. Edited December 12, 2013 by GMballistic
Grundy
I inquired about this, best bet is to replace Cats or Y- Pipe, then go for Mid + Back Box.

Yeah, I did this, although I didn't have an OEM back box, mine was the Japspeed K2 (so very similar in design), it didn't make the difference I was after. The OEM mid-pipe is 2.25 inch in diameter and I replaced it with a 3 inch diameter straight through pipe (no mid-section silencer). It DID give a nicer, deeper sound, but if you want more volume (i.e. an exhaust that turns heads as you're approaching), it's not worth trying to acheive it this way. Put the money towards something else (I bought a K1 shortly after trying my mid-pipe experiment). The actual volume/sound is governed a lot by the construction and design of the back box. As the OEM back box (and K2) is a cambered design, the 'sound' has to face a lot of obstruction before it reaches daylight. A performance back box (such as the Cobra), is less restrictive, allowing the gases and sound to travel more freely. Scott TMN
Can always remove just the silencer in the mid pipe? Not sure what kind of sound your after, should add some rasp if you like that. Should be cheap and easy for most garages to carry out..
nowhereboy
Cheers guys, I guess I'll just wait until christmas is out the way and treat myself to a cobra system. Was just hoping to do something quick and cheap to tie me over until then but it's probably not worth the bother

Darren-B
I removed the silencer on the mid pipe of my 350, It was about 20-30% louder than the stock exhaust. I had this setup for about 18months
brillomaster
just cut a tiny hole in the mid pipe before the back box - that will then a) be a lot louder than stock, and be good incentive to get a proper system!
DR_EVIL999
I removed the silencer in the mid pipe a few weeks after getting my Z, It made it louder and more raspy. Sounded good.
nowhereboy
Is removing the silencer a job for a garage? I'm not great with doing any work myself. Does it need another pipe in its place or is it as simple as removing it? I'm useless when it comes to this stuff.
DR_EVIL999
You need a bit of pipe the same diameter as the rest if the mid section, once the box is cut out this will be welded in its place.

I think you're best off getting a garage or exhaust place to do this for you as you'll need to doing some good welding otherwise it will blow and rust in no time as well especially if it's not stainless steel.
