Delboy_Z
Do all mods that you carry out to your cars increase your insurance? Does, say a remap or aftermarket exhaust still increase your insurance. Are there any mods you know of that don't? Sorry it it's a stupid question but I've been driving a company car for too long without having to bother with this insurance garbage lol. GMballistic
The only mods I can think of which don't increase insurance premiums are; stickers, fluffy dice, tax disc holder, new tyre valve caps, different wiper blades & seat covers. Everything else pretty much will add a percentage on top of your normal premium although some mods wouldn't cost you as much as you'd think to add on your insurance. Ekona
It's down to the insurer, end of. Some will not care about anything, as long as it does not increase power. Some will charge you if you so much as change the gear knob. The only safe answer is to tell them about absolutely everything, and let them make the call. brillomaster
hmmm, i havent declared my stubby aerial... i'm pretty sure normal road tyres dont need to be declared... track tyres probably should. and possibly uprated brake pads and fluid doesnt need to be declared - although increased disc size or calipers i do think need to be declared. however, a decent set of road michelins and some decent pads and fluid will make a car a lot faster round a track
KyleR
Cost me £8 for wheels and exhaust, £31 for body kit and lowering springs and nothing for the engine bay bling and interior stuff.
Ekona
however, a decent set of road michelins and some decent pads and fluid will make a car a lot faster everywhere Fixed It all depends on what your insurance policy says. If it's one of the Admiral group it will say something like "anything that alters the car from the specification from which a standard car would leave the factory, including any options or dealer-fit accessories" or words to that effect. Others are less strict. As I said, tell them everything and you can never be at fault. Including stubbies.

davedutch
Just told esure I have wrapped mine, painted wheels, coilovers(as of next week) changed stereo, changed registration number and got three points. All it cost me was £20 admin fee.Always tell them everything as you don't want to give them an excuse not to pay out should the worst happen. Ekona
At risk of repeating myself for a third time, it all depends on the insurer (!). Some will charge an admin fee. Some will not. Some will charge a standard "modified now" fee of £100 + the admin, but then you'll only pay the admin fee for further mods. Some will charge you a small fortune for anything and everything as they don't want that kind of risk for their business. You'll have to ring them and ask them. coldel
I am looking at buying a few modified cars at the moment, I literally send the for sale ad to them and let them get on with it - as Dan said, a few times, costs will vary - adding a miltek and sports cats to my Zed with Admiral cost £18, but then again I am nearly 40 living in a safe post code whilst putting 4000 miles on the car a year - would it cost a 21 year old £18 with a different insurer to do the same, who knows! "Exterior decorative changes" it comes under with the EUI Group (Admiral, Elephant, Diamond etc etc)
GMballistic
^^ Crazy. Some things I can understand that insurance companies will charge you more for adding to your car but other things bemuse me. Like why should you pay more for upgrading your braking system? making your car stop quicker & be safer surely, ..but no some insurer's will charge you more for that. Crazy imo. Ekona
Because you can then go faster as well, which is the whole reason for upgrading the brakes
Tomhappyapril
Why do you need better brakes ? Thats what they think
mx5 Paul
I have had this argument before with insurance companies, they say it has to be factory spec, but I got slammed with an extra £50 on my premium because I had put a different set of wheels on my MX5, ok they were white but they were a ltd edition wheel so they were actually factory spec. Just be careful should you want to change your Knob (gear that is) to something non factory spec!! andybp
It's a really difficult one to answer if your involved in an accident where someone gets hurt What i found is that you really have to have told them everything if they want to charge the earth shop around there are some good specialist insurers out there (yes thats from personal experiance and no it wasn't my fault)
Aglii
The insurence company here in Iceland, dont matter what you do to your car, the insurence stays the same. For my 350z insurence I pay 420 pounds a year, and that is the best insurence not the basic one. I could jump on my car,, or drive it into a wall while drinking vodka does not matter i only pay the deductible which is about 300 pounds, but if its not my fault when someone crashes into me or damge my car then i pay nothing. hensh65
Admiral only let you have 3 modifications to your car,, someone can confirm that. I told my insurer about everything, wheels, tints, bodykit. Was only a price hike of £100 quid or so and I was 22 when I took out the new policy
coldel
Yeah think you are right on the mod count, as soon as you click more than 3 it stops proceeding with the quote - also if you click supercharger it stops proceeding!
KyleR
Admiral is actually 6, it was confirmed to me when I was on the phone to them last month adding the bodykit. Also with admiral it's 6 areas, not individual mods. You could easily have 3-4 mods for suspension alone, camber arms, springs etc etc, but to admiral this is only one mod, as the arms are required to bring the toe and camber back into factory tolerances. Other companies will treat things differently, but luckily Admiral don't. Another example is exhaust mods. It's listed as "exhaust/manifold changed" so if I fit HFCs or different manifolds at a later date it's already included on my policy
