leonk
Good idea. Would it be better to get a few second hand ones in so you could offer an exchange basis? Only a thought.
Arran
If they work and are better then yes il take a pair. Sometimes have to push the button twice to get the boot fully open
peteman35
Good idea. Would it be better to get a few second hand ones in so you could offer an exchange basis? Only a thought. I did think of this, but as they are not a part of the car that is necessary to make it run and they aren't easy to get hold of. I thought it was better. Would probably be looking at about a week turn around Edited November 27, 2013 by peteman35
Randy_Baton
Anyone having problems with this should try the 3 * 1p trick first. Basically open the seal and put 3 pennies in the bottom of the seal and reseal. Did mine at the weekend and the boot now pops up fine first press. It wouldn't pop at all before had 2 double press and also pull up on the boot.
Arran
It can damage the paint that way though apparently
peteman35
This will be a 100% fix no more pennies

ZEUS
I just added thick rubber washers to the end of the springs, don't damage your paint like the pennies do.
leonk
While the penny and washer idea works, Peter's fix is in my opinion a better one as it replaces the weakened springs that are required to "pop" the tailgate up under spring pressure. Certainly £15 I would have spent.
Paddy78
Not trying to p!ss on anyone's fire here (And I may be totally wrong), but isn't the problem with the boot popping actually to do with the gas struts? People use washers and pennies to fix this temporarily as it only costs a few pence compared to replacing the struts. There's no guarantee that the springs will fix long term as the struts are still too weak (And presumably getting worse with age). Replacing the struts is only around £50 and it's a tested long term fix. Edited November 27, 2013 by Paddy78
peteman35
The gas struts don't aid the boot popping up, it's the springs that push the boot up from the latch
cs2000
Correct Pete for £15 id be up for this. Its annoying when you have arms full of shopping that you need two hands to open the boot. I did do the penny trick, but saw the damage starting to happen and removed them.
Paddy78
The gas struts don't aid the boot popping up, it's the springs that push the boot up from the latch In which case, I stand corrected and will be watching these with interest. (Currently using some rubber washers and removed the boot weight!)

GT4 Zed
I have uprated boot struts and as said above the issue is with the popper not strut. It doesn't pop high enough to let the strut do its job. Once I lift the boot about 15-20cm up the strut dies the rest. So I would be up for these uprated springs especially as I'm installing a huge spoiler now. Is the any reason you can't just send out the springs for the end user to swap it? It very easy and can save the hassle of posting both ways and bring the cost down
peteman35
Names added to the list I can send them out to you if you wish, but before try and remove the springs yourself first! They are not easy to get apart! you will find the washer with the E clip will go flying across the room taking someones eye out, i know first hand how much it hurts trust me... I have made up a special g clamp to remove them Safely Edited November 27, 2013 by peteman35
