Documentary about tax avoidance.

This is a good one if you're interested in politics and the economy....

Has some great scenes of google, amazon and starbucks representatives becoming lost for words whilst trying to explain themselves to uk mp's about how little tax they have paid.

Now I'm not exactly a fan of the government either and I'm still learning and have a lot to learn about how things really work in this country but this documentary is very insightful and shows the scale of tax dodging these huge corporations get away with.

Meanwhile I have been investigated for claiming back £170 in VAT for one quarter back in 2012. Had to go through the books for two days with my accountants, sit down and explain how the business works, had a HMRC VAT inspector come over and discuss with the accountants, etc

Waste of public funds, basically, and also my time and the accountants team's time. How fair is that!

Aaaargh!

You need to think bigger, if you avoid millions (see http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/nov/14/vodafone-tax-evasion-revenue-customs), they leave you alone. Getting 200 quid here off a plumber and 500 quid there off a sparky, means they're really clamping down on the real problem and saving John Q Taxpayer literally hundreds a year, nearly as much as they cost to us to do the clamping down. It's totally nothing to do with the sparky and plumber having gone to normal school and heads of big international brands having gone for lunch with the power men.

If you haven't the bottle to go after the big kids, what do you do? Pick on the kids who's legal team doesn't cost the GDP of a Latin American country. You can't blame MegaCorp International for following the laws of the country they operate in, if only the law makers could get some advice on how to tighten up the rules....
