wizurd
Just wondered if anyone on here had played the original or was looking to get this new version when it's out. Sounds like a great idea and by all accounts they've cleared up some of the issues from the first release but I do wonder if it'll really help to teach you how to play guitar. Seriously tempted though since need something to help improve my lack of playing skill.
Ekona
I've got the original, and to be honest it was a massive disappointment. If you can already play the guitar to a level where you can strum pretty much anything if you're given the chords, then this will be hugely frustrating as there's no easy way of picking a section and setting the difficulty and tempo. It's all done on how the game thinks you're doing and whether it thinks you've hit the notes or not. I'd say it's about 95% accurate, but sometimes I knew I'd nailed a section but it would say no! or I'd fluff a note and it would let me past. If, and it's a big if, RS14 now has that option, then it'd be worth a buy. If not, I'd leave it. And all that said, if you've ever picked up a guitar in your life I reckon it's an excellent teacher for the absolute beginner, as it explains everything clearly and builds you up slowly. I'm no maestro on the axe, but even I found it too basic for my needs.
wizurd
Cheers for the review I've done some reading and that was one of the complaints with the first version as I see it. Apparently you can now choose your own difficulty in this new version. My other concern was with the audio delay. By all accounts you need to have the audio running into an audio system rather than the TV. I don't do that at the mo. Yer I can strum chords and that but never really practiced with scales etc. Just playing around and learning what I want to song wise. I'll wait I think till its out (end of month) then see how the reviews go. Would also mean needing to get an electric guitar. Got an accostic already but that's no good for this game. Was hoping that it'll be a good way to improve my skills (or lack of them lol) but if it's too basic then no good.
Ekona
Didn't realise there were audio sync issues, but then I have my setup running as you describe so can set the delay exactly. I don't recall actually ever changing it mind, but then that's the same when I fire up Rockband too. You sound about the same level as me really, in that I can pretty much play any chord progression but have never been much of a soloist, which is why I wanted it as I thought it would help. It can to some extent I think, but there's times when it either throws far too much at you and it's hard to read what's on the screen. If it had the ability to adjust the speed on the fly using a controller then it would be perfect, so if RS14 has that then I might well give it a go. I tried it with my bass the other day, and it's really good for that, but that's probably because you're dealing with less info on the screen at once. wizurd
Yer they've apparently taken feedback from the previous game and put in the option to choose your difficulty. I might well give this a go since it'll also have more songs to download down the line. Not sure how large the catalog will be but will do so more hunting on that. Really it should be a perfect match since I enjoy playing around on the acoustic and the xbox. Just combining the two May well set my audio up differently though. Good excuse to get a sound system for the tv/blueray Edited October 20, 2013 by wizurd
Ekona
Did you get this in the end matey? I bought it today, seeing as how it was 25% off on Steam, and I have to say it's a massive improvement on the original. Every complaint I had has been perfectly addressed, and it seems to register the notes much cleaner now. You can set difficulty, speed, section, all within the main game which just makes it so much smoother to transition between having a laugh with it and trying to 100% nail something. wizurd
Hoping to get it for Christmas excellent news though. Glad to get a honest review on here of it. The videos and stuff online seemed really positive. Cannot wait to get it now any downsides at all? Ekona
Not so far. Well, the add-on songs aren't cheap, but the standard selection is pretty decent and varied so it's not too bad. The jam sessions are genius, and work far better than you would expect them to.
