cragybar
hi guys, Ive a problem with my 350 intermittently usually when its been raining, when you start the car the fan squeels.... now this on its own is not too much of an issue. I have noticed that this is causing the alternator not to charge. now your thinking loose belt. if I go any tighter with the belts im afraid ill start ripping bearings out of things. belts are that tight that they have been smoking! I have changed the belts twice, ive had the alternator bearings replaced incase they were seizing or sticking, this is really getting annoying... any suggestions? please im fit to scream. if this is a quirk of the 350 that's fine but im just sick of tyring to fix it with no luck... Keyser
Your Fans don't squeal - we don't have a "fan" belt, both the fans on the 350 rad are electric (just to clear that up) 2 possibilities I can think of - 1 your battery is on it's way out and trying to draw large amounts of power just after start to "recharge" However I would think it more likely that your alternator is on it's last legs, could be a bearing but it's is causing to much resistance when cold. Get the battery checked it that's not it I would be dropping a PM to ZmanZlex for a pre owned alternator This is of course just my opinion and could be complete twoddle
cragybar
Thanks mate, as I said alternator seems ok an was just overhauled. Battery seems good too but it is the size of a match box so might not hurt to replace it. And as for twoddle.... I thought that was my speciality. aidan
it could be just the belt thats glazed? but as you have changed them twice, unlikely. Dont overtighten it...you'll damage bearings. What is the running surface of pulley like? Edited September 28, 2013 by aidan
Dblock
I had a similar problem. Check the belt tightness but check the nuts on the tensioners themselves. Replaced and tightened them up, no squeeling.
Dblock
Also when the car squeels does the volt gauge drop?
cragybar
Sorry for the delay in gettin back to you had a bad week in work. All pulleys seem ok an yes the volt gauge drops which is why I had the alternator bearings replaced just in case they were starting to seize. Dblock
Honestly sounds like a loose belt. The nut needs replaced as other wise it wont keep tension on the belt
rtbiscuit
Talc your belt with talcum powder.
coldel
You can also buy belt dressing online to help keep it in good shape and prevent cracking/slipping
Neilp
Sounds like somebody has sprayed wd40 or something on the alternator and its got on the belt tbh This can cause smoking also Edited October 6, 2013 by Neilp
