drfeelgood73
Decided to change the discs and pads as well as the clutch and flywheel in one big die hard effort..... All went well apart from the change of clothes needed as it was hammering it down with rain at 2am. With the car half in and half out of the garage, getting those top 2 bolts in the gearbox were a right pain in the backside. Flywheel bolts were a challenge without air tools, but not impossible....Thank god I bought a big high lift jack to get the gearbox out..... Definitely a job I would take on again..... sounded a hell of a lot more complicated than it was to do....taking off and putting all the bits and pieces and torqueing them up takes up most of the time.... Got her up nice and high....just enough space Its a bit of a lump to get out.... All the old gear.... :teeth: :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:
WhackyWill
Well done.
HmmBen
Nicely done. Looks like those discs needed it. Very good looking jack too, Cant imagine getting it that high any other way.
Yampiedog
Fair play, would have loved to have done my own clutch and flywheel but just not enough time and space for me to do that sort of job. Good effort!
Jp606
Always satisfying doing the work yourself Nice looking Z, I like the way it sits has it been lowered or are those bigger wheels?
drfeelgood73
Thanks all......Yeah.... I love doing it myself....very satisfying. Not only that, but I go a bit OTT and clean, smooth, grease and tidy up everything around what I do.... And I know it's done right....... Can you guess I have had bad garage experiences in the past...lol The car has been lowered and 19's put on with wheel spacers.... 245/35/19. Fronts....275/35/19 rears 20mm spacer fronts....25mm spacers rear....... Had to roll the arches though.... Roughly got 8cm ground to bottom edge of front lip which is just right.....so far...... The jack is a cracker.... Sealey 2200hl.....

rabbitstew
Thats a hell of a car jack, looks like its jacked the car up like 6ft!!!! Awesome. I do all my own mechanics myself, but not sure id fancy pulling the gearbox off.
scobie140
Good effort! just shows the clutch can be done without needing ramps, looks like I have no excuse for not doing my own when ever it decides to go
choptop
Good work. Good to see someone doing it themselves.

drfeelgood73
I did actually use ramps at the front end as well scobie...... at that height I would have been balancing on the nose.... Got a set of the adjustable ramps which go to about twice the height of ordinary...... Need that height to get that bell housing out.... Thanks to the ZMAN and Clarke Motorsport ( REDLINE ) at Kintore for having the bits and pieces ready to go.....
samsniss350z
Looks like a good job really well done. Can you tell me where you got that tiny little aerial from? Does it work OK?
drfeelgood73
I got it from ebay...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230968168657?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 It works very well....but I had to do a bit of modding to get it to work. Had to run a small copper wire( insulated) can be found on old hi-fi systems from the back of the antenna up the inside of the boot rubber strip..... out the gap by the small side window and along the thin black strip above the passenger door. The wire is so thin you really have to look close to see it is there...... Without this the aerial is crap.....

I only have standard ramps that don't fit the zed. did plan to make my own low profile ramps but never got round to getting a welder. no sign of my clutch going so plenty of time to get them made up. Dicky
Youve inspired me now! Being retired from all that 9-5 stuff I've got the time to do the clutch myself, which can't be far off as I've done around 65k now. Can you tell me if you had to buy any of the specialised tools as recommended in the manual or did you just improvise?
drfeelgood73
No specialised tools...... But I had a tranny jack with a strap which was a big help..... If doing by yourself, you may need a weight to put on the back of the engine for putting the gearbox back on as it slopes forward a bit when it's off.... I piled my brake discs on top of the plenum which worked a treat.... Just standard spanners, sockets, torque wrenches, rubber mallet, pullers for the bearing, extensions bars( about 50inch should do) Air tools would have been good to get the fly wheel off and on.... But you can jam the teeth of the old one with a crow bar to get the leverage to remove the bolts.....Then If you get the lightened fly from Alex, you can either use the old fly and line up the teeth with the new one in place ,whilst lowered onto the deck just slightly to get a bit of purchase to torque them back on.... Just don't put pressure on the new fly vertically, just line up the teeth so they are interlocked...... Or I suppose you could jam a bar into the holes in the fly against the inner housing........ A couple of strong flat blade screwdriver to crack the housings Lots and lots of patience and biscuits for getting it back together..... Taking all the stuff around it off and putting it back together took the longest.... For me anyway..... You will get a clutch alignment tool with the exedy clutch...... Lots of brake cleaner...... I used 2 full cans to give it all a damn good clean..... Spare exhaust bolts..... I just fitted a new exhaust 8 months ago, and already 2 of the bolts were needing replaced........ After connecting the prop shaft , you may need to turn the engine once it is all together to tighten up the last one if it is placed right at the top.... No biggy..... I would recommend having decent tools to do the job...... If you are going ahead with it , give me a shout when you are planning it and I can be on the end of a phone if you need any help, as I am sure others on here would be as well.....
Dblock
Tranny jack? So many jokes. They are handy though. Honestly all those jobs would have been so so much eaiser with good air tools, so I give you extra respect for that! Helping others

Dicky
Cheers young man for that. Thanks for your offer of help but Its not an imminent job at the moment. However I have thought about it for a while as the miles are begining to build up. Ive also worried how much it would cost at the main dealers, BIG BUCKS probably. It would be cheaper at a back street garage but who can you trust, having said that which main dealer can you trust. Neither will take the degree of care that I would. My garage is small but I've got good space in the back garden and would do it there, but need good weather. I don't do much milage so should get through to next spring and do it then. Reading your post inspired me and made me think that given the spare time I have now why not have a go. so I will. if I'm still alive next spring and your still a member I may well take you up on your offer of advice. Cheers
