Steel Lynx
Hi all, So I decided to go out for a drive last night. After opening her up for a bit I have now noticed that I have a ticking/tapping type noise as I'm going along. I thought it might be a stone in the tyre at first but it sounds too metallic and I've kept an eye on it for a good long distance and it's not gone away, it only starts from around 25mph upwards and gets faster as I get faster so must be ( I assume) something to do with the wheels? The engine sounds fine if I'm at a standstill and rev it, which is why I thought it might be wheel related. I was wondering if anyone else has had, or knows what this might be as I'm a bit concerned about it (and Nissan is fully booked up at the moment) Thanks in advance for any feedback or suggestions. Commander
If it's speed related, it could really be anything after the gearbox output, but don't forget static components like too brakes, suspension, etc.. Does the noise change under hard acceleration, braking or cornering? Can you feel it through your feet, seat, steering, etc?
HmmBen
As above really. You didnt run anything over and it could be stuck to your propshaft/driveshafts. Small bit of rope or similar?
ZMANALEX
The first two things to check are a stone or similar stuck in tyre and also that the rear dirt shield is not touching the rotor. But as the guys have said it could be numerous other items causing your noise. Alex
Steel Lynx
I have had a look at the tyres but can't see anything out of the ordinary. I would say it's definitely something wheel related although I'm no mechanic. @ Commander. The sound gets faster as I speed up and slower when I slow down but doesn't change tone and doesn't seem to be related to the brakes, there's also no different feel to the car during cornering or general driving, just a constant tic tic tic tic. @HmmBen. I don't remember running over anything like rope. I have had the noise before but it went away so thought it was a stone the first time. This time it's not going away, although it's only really audible with the offside window open (although now I know it's there I can hear it a bit with the windows up now) @ZMANALEX. I will go and check the rear dirt shield once the car's cooled down a bit and I can have a good nose around.
Neilp
The dirt shield generally sounds more like a scraping noise. I'd go back and jack the car up and check the tyres with great care. I'm almost certain it will be a stone in the tyre and you're maybe not spotting it.
Steel Lynx
Well, I managed to pursuade a garage to get my car up on their lift (very carefully) and sadly, no stones, no nails, and nothing around the prop/drive shaft so now I'm stumped. The guy at the garage had a look and said he couldn't be sure and not to hold him to it but he thought the collar on the right side of the LSD wasn't where it should be and thought there was some play in it. He also said that maybe a bearing is wearing or worn out in there. I will phone Nissan on Monday and book it in......It's beginning to sound like it's going to get expensive very quickly! Is the vehicle not currently under warranty? I'd be taking it to a specialist tbh and order the parts from a trader on here. You will save yourself a fortune. Where are you located so somebody can recommend an independent specialist?
Steel Lynx
The car was first registered in April 2010 so I'm guessing the warranty will have run out now. I'm located in Lewes, East Sussex.
Neilp
If you can stomach a small drive, Abbey motorsport are in oxted, Surrey. I'm sure they will solve this no problem. Edit, got location wrong Edited September 7, 2013 by Neilp
K370Z2
Rather than go to the main dealer id rather set myself on fire. Main dealers are good for the following :- 1. Ringing me to ask what service my car is due after i had booked it in & told them to do anything it needed. 2. Carrying out a P2 when a P3 was due 3. Carrying out a P2 after they had rang me to ask what service was due & i told them a P3 4. Charging me for a P3 after carrying out a P2 when they had rang me to ask what service was due & i told them a P3 5. After ringing up to complain about the above & nobody ringing me back, so i wrote to them 6. Ring me up & asking why i hadn't just rang them instead of writing to complain about the above 7. Waiting them to sort out the above since June 14th So as NeilP says use one of the traders on here. Even if it is in warranty if your car id rather let one of the traders look at 1st if its a warranty issue take it back to the main dealer for a fix
Steel Lynx
NeilP, that's only 10 minutes further away than the Nissan HPC I went to (Tunbridge Wells) for my p3 service so not a problem at all. I will give them a call on Monday and see when they can fit me in. Thanks to all for your advice (again)

A number of members on this forum have had extremely positive experiences with tumbridge wells. In my case they went above and beyond to fix an issue with the roof on my old 350z, in the end lending me a brand new 370 to take to the wales event while they sorted it. I know ebized is very happy to have them work on his zed and has gone back numerous times. I would use them again. I would give them a call and see if there is anythting they can do to help now you have been to them and they know about the forum after mine and ebizeds visits and the fact they held an event for us a few years ago. Steel Lynx
I recently posted in the service section about my experience with Motorline in Tunbridge Wells. I was extremely happy with everything they did, the people were nice and helpful. Ian even sorted out the recall for the steering lock without me mentioning it even though I'd not received a letter about it, and also sorted my sticky boot catch! He was very thorough! Steel Lynx
Well, I took my car to Motorline Nissan in Tunbridge Wells again and as usual, great service from the guys and gals there!! Told them about the noise on the phone and booked it in for today. I took one of the mechanics out with the offside window down so he could listen to the noise. He then had a drive and a listen and then took us back to the garage. I think I'd only been sat down 5 minutes when they called me out to have a look. The steel cables inside the offside front were coming off. One of them was tapping against the alloy wheel inside the tyre as I was going along. No one had ever seen that before, they even took a picture (which they are emailing to me, I will stick them up on here should anyone think it might be of interest). I now have two Michelin sport 3's on there now (No one had any super sport) Glad that's all sorted anyway!!

Steel Lynx
For those that are interested, here's a couple of pictures of the offside front tyre after they removed it. Bit of a mess..... Edited September 13, 2013 by Steel Lynx
Commander
So it seems the guy that makes the Bridgestones that are de-laminating in F1 also works on the RE050s as well? Nice!
