Ekona
I dun geddit. Why do people, after purchasing a new car that isn't modified in any way from how it left the factory, come to an owner's club forum and then post pics of it? Now, I appreciate it's new to them and they want to look at it lots, and I get why people post pics of other marques on a one-marque club (like matey did the other day on here with his Mustang) as it's different to everything else on there, but otherwise it's just completely pointless. Do they think that people are going to go "Oh wow, a completely OEM car in Resale Grey! How incredibly novel! Looks amazing!"? Really, we're all just sitting there casting a critical eye of the quality of the photograph, the locale or the cleanliness of the car rather than the actual car itself. Mainly because we've seen it a million times before. I really don't get that. Not aimed at anyone on here, it was someone on the Porker forum who put up a shot of their car which was an early 997, in silver, with the default wheels, on their driveway. Now clearly I like 911s, but this could not have looked any more bland if it had been an Audi A4 TDi in aforementioned grey. There followed a few polite posts of "Terrific", "Lovely", "Beautiful", but I can't help but feel these people were just being nice for the sake of it: Certainly a flat photo of a silver 997.1 is not terrific, lovely, nor beautiful. So why? Pretty sure I didn't do it with my Zed on here (and if I'm wrong and someone is sad enough to search back through my posts, I shall take my mocking chastisement like a man!), and I just can't fathom it.
DoogyRev
Perhaps you should just be happy for the person who has made the new purchase. Perhaps the person on the beetle forum put their life savings in to getting that car. Perhaps you should just not comment any any threads that annoy you
djb55
I think you need to remember mate that when buying a new car, no matter what it is oem or not , its still a buzz and mine is bog standard but in my eyes its the nicest looking zed out there. Each to their own mate. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4

Ekona
Noooo, I get the point of a welcome post saying how happy they are with their new car, and a description of it. I totally get that. I did that here, deffo. It's the dull pic of a stock car thing to other owners I don't get.

I dont understand people who start build threads because theyve swapped the aerial or gear knob - nobody cares about your knob I think on this latter point you need to remember that for many people this could be the first forum they have ever been on. Suddenly they are introduced to the world of modifying. For me and you, nothing short of FI or an engine pull would constitute a "build". But for someone new to forums, who is possibly already mid way through a midlife crisis, changing an aerial or gear knob is something massive and completely away from the norm. To them it's a build. Also, sometimes I think newbies want to feel like they fit in. And with so many people doing things that could constitute a "build thread" they feel they are missing out.
Will370z
Intesting point and i get what you mean. On one side It's human nature, we like to show off our new toys and get confirmation from others that they like it too. When i pop over to see my 2 year old nephew the first thing he does is go grab his new toys and show me, toy after toy. I didn't study psychology it must be some inbuilt behaviour to share and build a bond over something he values. I remember when i used to do something similar with my uncle, trying to impress and see if he liked the latest christmas present i got. Now im sure there are loads of similar presents out there and he may not be too bothered but to me it was mine, i loved it and i wanted to show it off. His acknowledgement built a bond between us, a recognition. For people buying zeds they chose them as they want to be different, its clear they love them, from the amount of time they clean, detail and look at them from their house windows, as they walk off to the shops or look in reflections as they drive along. Posting pics of their cars on a related forum is a natural extension of this behaviour, this is my car, i love it and want to show it off to others. There may be loads of others out there just the same but to me this one is mine, its special and i want to show it off. Theres a hope others will agree and thus a confirmation of what you have bought or chosen is right and a bond is started. You then feel comfortable and accepted and contribute more to the forum. I agree some may say," lovely car, nice example "and yes they may be saying it to be nice or polite, as in of itself it may be something pretty normal. But the important thing is we say it, to them we can see it is special, they've invested significant time and money to get it. We recognise how much our car purchase meant to us and congratulate them as much as we wanted others to congratulate us. Its all part of the process of being accepted and accepting others i guess. We see many people on this forum doing just that and its a relection of the type of person on this forum. When i joined in no way did i expect to find so many like minded people who would go out of their way to help if i needed it, who would work so hard so others could enjoy a meet, a meal, a hoon or a long weekend away in wales. I've met some close genuine friends from this forum which i never expected and it's because of that thought for others thats shown by the people here. Anyways im getting sidetracked but thats my 2 pence. Interesting question though. Edited August 17, 2013 by Will370z
mattross1313
Banging a pic up with a welcome thread is pretty normal, stock car or not people have just got a new car, it needs to be shown off My build thread is hardly exciting, but its more a way for me track what i've done. If no-one listed or documeneted their mods, then all the how-to-guides and things would be pretty lame. Or let other members see what a potential mod would look like
Paddy78
Well my build thread is not going to interest anyone in the same way that say Bizz's will. I enjoy being a member of this club and like seeing what other people do to their cars, no matter how small. Just because your car is stock or only slightly modified shouldn't prevent you from being able to join in. I hope people continue to post pics of their cars, even the stock ones!
ioneabee
^^^^ what Will, Matt and Paddy said now I could be pedantic and add a photo here of my stock zed..............but I've only just got up and can't be arsed trying to wind Dan and Ian up (yet)

I just want to be part of something awesome on here, never done anything like it and most people's feedback is usually honest, you see loads of "I really don't like those wheels!". I know some show mods on my Zed are not as interesting as loads of the incredible technical go mods. But as with any post on the Internet or social media, or anything you say in conversation - deep down we all want some kind of validation, like "nice fluffy dice" or "where did you get that set of valve caps" or "I wish I had the skills to do what you've done in your engine bay". Go easy on us, we just want to be part of the gang and learn from the serious modders.
Ebized
Simples. The OP doesn't want to be bombarded by umpteen posts with Quite often the lack of pics is to do with many newbies joining the forums (including myself when I first joined on here in 2006) not knowing how to post pics. Rather than your thoughts Dan, having seen hundreds of pics posted of standard Beetles Porkers or Zeds But lets face it the reason we on this or other car forums is that we love our motors and whether it is bog standard or modded it might have taken some time to afford one and of course it is natural you want others to see it.
jumping350
I think it goes both ways i put pics of my mods up and no one cares hahaha i guess pics standard or not add something to a thread and people are more inclined to take a look then
richmillions
Because so many join this forum with no intention of making any mods........and then.......... I'll just change one item, and then two........where does it end...
rtbiscuit
I'm a visual learner, so for me pictures make text more interesting regardless of what's on it. I'm also a kinaesthetic learner, so I learn by doing. That last fact has no bearing on the topic, I just thought I'd share it.

AMT
Its so grey I LOVE it... and I want you all to enjoy it! Its a car forum! What do you think people are gonna do lol So heres my completely stock 313...in GREY...with an AERIAL... oh no...sorry I have rear tints too Am just playin but I do think this is a bit of a moany thread Ekona! lol But, on a more serious note I think a lot of people on here who join don't mind seeing varying colours, stock or minor mods, gives them an idea what they want to do or if they want to get the car. I remember when I joined I looked over a good few ones and juggled between the 276,300 and 313 over minor differences to see which I liked most, what looked newer, which would stay 'fresher' lookin' etc.
coldel
I think its fine to post up stock cars - they come in very different states of wear from showroom to tatty. Its also good to have a start point, my first mod was an aerial which I posted up on a build...next thing you know I had various bits of Stillen all over the car, vinyl wrapping and modifications to the BHP output. Also quite handy if someone else on the forum recognises the car as something they previously owned and can add some history to it. And a welcome message is all the more boring without a pic...and you always get the pic police come up with the smiley having a rant if you dont post one!
